RESULTS REACHED IN CANADA THIS YEAR AS A HIGHLY PROSPEROUS FIELD OF RACING 1 V The Canadian racing campaign of this year, as long as it lasted, was one of great patronage and prosperity. Brought to an end untimely by government edict, all of the customary late summer and autumn meetings were perforce abandoned. It follows that no entirely satisfactory comparison witli previous years can be made. But from the fact that up to the time of tlie cessation of racing the sum of 74,185 had been distributed among the winning owners, it can be deduced that all Canadian records in this regard would have been broken had the sport been allowed to proceed to its appointed time of ending for the year. A general increase of money in stakes and purses was a marked feature of tlie campaign, with a generous response from horsemen and the public. No better handicap field has started on this side of tlie big water this year than that which contested tlie Frontier Handicap at AVindsor. In fact, the inducements were such that many of tlie best horses on this side of the international line were sent over to help entertain our horse-loving neighbors at nearly all the leading meetings. Except Dorval, every one of the organizations provided with mile tracks increased their daily average of distribution, the Ontario Jockey Club showing the substantial daily increase of ,871.78 over its record for 1916. Of the minor tracks only King Edward showed an increase. All of the others fell off in their offerings, yet, because of the installation of the mutucls, made greater profits than in any other year of their existence for a like period of racing. J. : .. 0 3 3 225 In quality of horses engaged in their racing, the Canadians were favored. Such, as Old Rosebud, Boots, Rancher, Fruit Cake, Runes, Hanovia, Skeptic, Iron Cross II., Goldcrest Boy, A. N. Akin, Etruscan, Hodge, Water Lady, Arriet, Blind Baggage. Pan Zareta and Marion Goosby of the older division, and such two-year-olds as High Cost, Charlie Leydecker, Jack Hare Jr., Viva America, Virginia Yell, Lady Eileen and Storm Bound, to mention only a few of many, are good enough to go to the races anywhere. His sterling victory in the Frontier Handicap served to give Old Rosebud first place in the long list of money-earning horses. A better race horse never- headed a Canadian annual list. The splendid filly Fruit Cake finished second to him, the trifle of 5 in advance of the Kings Plate winner Belle Mahonc. Next in order came the familiar and good handicap horses Runes and Rancher.
