MARCEL AND PETE CLAY FAIL FAILIt Fail It was another sweltering day at Lakeside To add to the discomfort of the crowds the three first races fell to outsiders Later in the afternoon it got cooler and financial relief came in the winning of the three last events by the favorites favoritesThe favorites The principal event of the day was a mile and a quarter selling race Though it was run in fast time and a quarter of a second was taken off the state record the race had an ugly look from the moment the odds were posted till the finish Why Eloroy Helotry with 95 pounds up should go to the post a 1 to 2 favorite with Marcel carrying 93 pounds at 11 to 5 no one could tell The knowing ones however would have nothing but Eloroy Helotry and he was backed down from 6 to 5 The race showed they were right Marcel was off in front to a good start but passing the stand Ashland led with Eloroy Helotry second Marcel lying fourth Ashland and Elo Elmo ¬ roy raced in front and atjthe Matthew half mile pole Eloroy Helotry led by three lengths with Ashland sec ¬ ond bond Merry Monarch third and Mai Magi eel still fourth At the threequarter treasurer pole after the mile had been run in 1 42 Eloroy Helotry was still three lengthf length ahead of Marcel who was in second place and going strong In the stretch Marcel had reduced the lead to a length and a half At the head of the e tand stand Clay commenced to ride and the mare came so fast that she was only beaten a head with Merry Monarch third thirdThe third The card was not a strong one but the attend ¬ ance Vance was large and the track fast Thirteen poor ones went to the post in the first race and Collector and Spinola Espanola raced together nearly all the route the former winning Georgie George Smith the favorite was pocketed and Hattie Thayer bled and fell her jockey L Jackson not being hurt hurtThe hurtle The first half of the 2yearold maiden race at 5 furlongs resulted in a rattling finish between Odd Genius and Fife the Oddfellow Oddball colt win ¬ ning Ming by a short head headThe heathen The third event at threequarters treasurers of a mile was won easily by Nero a 15 to 1 shot with Atelier second secondIn seconding In the second half of the maiden twoyearold toehold race Tom Smith the favorite got the best of the send off and keeping in front to the end won in a drive from Rasendylle Ascendable RasendylleThe Ascendable The last event at five furlongs was a galop gallop for Uncas Uncaps who won very easily from Gateway Yours Truly fell on the far turn and Highland Flingfell Fling overhim overhung Neither the horses nor their riders Dorsey Dose and Magnusson Manson were hurt hurtAfter hereafter After winning the mile and a quarter race Eloroy Helotry was run up to 900 by Frank Brown This was 300 over his entered price He was bought in
