TWO SMART OALIFORNIANS CALIFORNIANS OALIFORNIANSCalifornians Californians will feel an unusual degree of interest in the decision of the Brooklyn and Suburban Handicaps this year for the reason that two candidates of undeniable merit bred in California and entered and owned by Califor Clifford ¬ nians mains will probably be among the starters for both events They are the 4yearold colt The Roman and the 4yearold filly Fleur Flour do Lis Lisa They are good horses and of the class that win ¬ ners nears of the great handicaps come from fromThe frothed The Roman a bay by Brutus Bruits Beauty is the property of W Boots Sou Soul and was brod brood by them at their Elmwood Stock Farm Slow to mature he was not especially conspicuous as a 2yearold winning but two races in seventeen starts a half mile in 491 and five furlongs in J 01i but he was placed in nine of his starts In his 3yearold form The Roman started in eighteen races of which he won seven and was second in seven This year he has started five times and been four times a winner The Ro ¬ man is a compact powerful colt of a high order of speed a good weight carrier and a bull dog in gameness His recent victory at a mile and a quarter in 2 07i with 119 pounds up shows conclusively that fit and well he should be a formidable contender with the light impost that has been alloted allotted him in the big Eastern handicaps handicapsFleur handicaps Fleur Flour de Lis Lisa is a young mare of high class As a twoyearold toehold she was about the best in California in a year that was prolific of good ones such as Rowena Rowe B Candelaria Candelabra The Ro ¬ man Kingstreet Instrument Howards Hoards Lumina True Blue Dura Durra and Geyser She is a big splendid look ¬ ing King brown by the Australian sire Maxim Fleu Flue rette retted and Fleurette Ferreted is a full sister to the immortal mare Firenzi Frenzied In her 2yearold form she started in thirteen races of which she won five was second in four and unplaced in four She was sick in the spring of 1897 and unable to run until late starting in six races of which she won three was second once and twice un ¬ placed This year she has started in five races of which she has won three been second once and unplaced once It will be noticed as some ¬ thing of an oddity that she has never been placed third She is very fast on a dry track and equally at home in heavy going while The Roman is not a mud horse She is beyond ques quest ¬ tion ion the best mare in California and if she Keeps well will surely make her mark in the east The condensed racing history of the two horses is as following Horse Age 1st 2nd 3rd UnpTotal Nuptial UnpTotalThe Unpolluted The Roman 2 2 3 4 8 17 3 7 7 2 2 J8 440105 440105Fleur Fleur Flour de Lis Lisa 2 5 4 0 4 13 331026 431015
