GOSSIP OF THE TURF Mr Charles F McLean CLean the well known turf ¬ man and racing judge who has charge of tho thou horses belonging to the late E F McLean CLean now in training at Louisville yesterday received a letter from Trainer Tom Blackburn in which the latter reports all the horses doing well especially the pride of the stable Gallivant The colt was one of the best twoyearolds toeholds out west last fall but went lame and had to be fired for a bad leg He stood the operation all right and lameness soon disappeared There is no better looking colt at Churchill Downs this year than Gallivant He has been galloping and jogging along with the rest of the string and seems to improve right along If nothing goes wrong with him he can be depended upon being one of the starters in the Kentucky Derby of 1898 and not a few horsemen think he will win that classic event Cincinnati Enquirer Although two days have passed over the time limit for the first declarations from the Brook ¬ lyn Handicap only two horses have been de ¬ clared cleared out of that big event They are August Belmonts Belmont St Bartholomew and the Good Hope Stables Mohegan Morgan St Bartholomews Bartholomew impost was 100 pounds and Mohegans Mohicans 97 This leaves fortytwo forty horses as probable starters The west has yet to be heard from but as Howard Mann the winner of the event last year Fleur Flour de Lis Lisa and The Roman the three handicap candidates who are racing at Frisco are doing well there is little danger that they will be declared New York Sun
