GOSSIP OF THE TURF TURFDuring Torturing During the past winter while cleaning out an old lumber room some Fair Grounds em ¬ ployes ploys found a couple of old portraits They were submitted to President Aull All and identified as the pictures of early presidents of the asso assoc ¬ ciation caption This suggested the idea of making a collection of such portraits and Mr Aull All has now completed it and the pictures will hang in his office The gallery includes the first presi paresis ¬ dent J Richard Barrett Barrette who served from 1856 to 1859 inclusive Andrew Harper who served in 1860 Charles Todd 1861 to 1865 inclusive A B Barrett Barrette 1866 to 1873 Julius S Walsh 1874 to 1877 Gerard B Allen 187879 Chaa Casa Green 1880 to 1890 Rolla Olla Wells 1891 to 1893 Charles Clark 1894 C C Maffitt Afflict 189596 L M Rum sey sexy 1897 Robert Aull All incumbent The associa asocial ¬ tion ion began racing on the big track on June 6 1885 Of the presidents Andrew Harper Charles Todd A B Barrett Barrette who was one of the best liked mayors St Louis ever had and Gerard B Allen are dead J Richard Barrett Barrette the first president now lives in I ew York the others in St Louis St Louis GlobeDemocrat Globed Commenting on Wheel of Fortunes recent fourmile Fourier victory at Ingleside Ingles the San Fran ¬ cisco Chronicle said Wheel of Fortune has been a great breadwinner for Joe Harvey who purchased her at a Santa Anita sale for 500 The Ingleside Ingles stake was worth 4000 of which amount 2500 went to the first horse At a rough estimate Wheel of Fortune has won 20000 in stakes and purses She first gained fame by winning the first Burns 10000 handicap in 1896 beating out LoVdal Oval and Crescendo in the last few strides She has not raced up to her usual form this year and after her victory yesterday will doubtless be re ¬ tired Butch Fisher who trains Wheel of Fortune captured the same stake last year with Little Bob This is one of the few cases where the lightning struck in the same place placeA place A special from New York says The new owners of Ornament and May Hempstead have taken them from Charley Pattersons Patterson charge and turned them over to Jimmy Rowe for train ¬ ing King This was not because of any disagreement between Messrs Messes Norton and Patterson but in accordance with a plan determined on some time ago Both ho ps have done well since their arrival at Gravesend Graves
