BOWLING BROOKS VICTORY VICTORYIn Victorian In well chosen words the New York Sun thus describes how the race for the Metropolitan Handicap was run runStarter unstated Starter Fitzgerald took tbe tube field in hand at 4 50 oclock o'clock and gpt pt them off in good order af ¬ ter tear fifteen minutes fencing at the barrier 1m perator operator was quickest in his stride and showed the way to Octagon Typhoon II Macy Marcy Algol Bowling Brook George Keene Dr Catlott Calotte and Ben Holfaday Colada in the order named Halfway up the back stretch Typhoon II went to the front and led Imperator by a length Octagon was moving freely at Imperatqrs Imperator girths while Bowling Brook was in the next place with George Keene in close attendance Ben Holladay Holland was still whipperin whimpering Turning for home Typhoon II was still in front but Octagon was closing with him fast while Imperator still clung to the leading bunch Once straightened out for home Typhoon II fell back and Octagon took up the running a head in front of Bowling Brook Opposite th 9 free field the Morris colt made his bid and showed a head in front of Octagon on whom Macy Marcy was lapped Dr Cat lett let had moved up to fourth place with George Keene next At this stage the anxious riders were working as hard as their mounts ajid aid busy whips were cracking like small fireworks Clays resolute call on Bowling Brook proved too much for Octagon but the race was not yet over Sloan brought up George Keene from fifth place with a rush into second The effort was a gallant one but Clay never weakened on Bowl ¬ ing King Brook and held his length advantage to the end Simms Sims kept tbe tube tiring Octagon together long enough to finish third a length behind George Keene and two lengths in front of the Schorr Scorer candidate Macy Marcy on whom Burns put up a finished but futile ride After being last until too late to be a factor Ben Holladay Holland came through the beaten bunch and reached the line fifth followed by Imperator Algol Dr Catlett Cattle and Typhoon II
