GOSSIP OF THE TURF The program book for the spring meeting of the Brooklyn Jockey Club is out and it provides for fourteen days racing beginning on Satur Saturn ¬ day May 28 During the meeting twentytwo twenty stakes will be disposed of and judging from the number and quality of the entries in each event the Brooklyn Jockey Clubs spring meet ¬ ing King of 1898 promises to be one of the most bril brail ¬ liant pliant in its history The Expectation Stakes for 2yearolds and the Brooklyn Handicap are the features of the opening day and with such horses as Ornament Ben Holladay Holland Dr Catlett Cattle Tillo Till Typhoon II Ben Eder Edger Plaudit and Traverser Traverse to draw on for the Brooklyn a grand contest may be expected The other fix ¬ tures tues are the Clover Stakes for 2yearold fillies and the Broadway for 3yearolds to be decided May 30 The May Stakes for 3yearolds is the only stake event for June 1 and the Parkway Handi Hand ¬ cap is the feature for June 2 On June 4 the Hud ¬ son Stakes for 2yearolds and the Carlton for 3yearolds will be decided and the Bed ¬ ford for 2yearolds is the one fixture for June 6 The schedule for the rest of the meeting is as follows June 7 the Patchogue Pathogen Stakes for 3yearolds and upward and the Gazelle Stakes for 3yearold fillies June 8 the Kensington Hurdle race June 9 the Manhan Manhandle set Stakes for 2yearolds and the Falcon for 3yearolds June 11 the Great American for 2yearolds worth 12500 and the Preakness Realness for 3yearolds June 13 the Myrtlo Myrtle Stakes for 3yearolds and upward June 14 the Hanover Stakes for 2yearolds and the Greater New York Steeplechase June 15 the Brookdale Boodle Handicap and June 16 the Tremont Fremont Stakes for 2yearolds and the Brooklyn Derby for 3year olds worth 10000 Turf Field and Farm FarmPresident President Thomas H Williams Jr said last Monday to a San Francisco Chronicle repre prepare ¬ sentative tentative Our association will not get out a stake book until September but it is our idea to give specials instead of some of the guaran guaranty ¬ teed stakes It has taken a few seasons to find out what is best in these matters and we intend to give fewer stake events but will endeavor to make them richer and more attractive Presi Paresis dent Williams is very well satisfied with the outcome of the present season and holds the opjnion opinion that the class of horses was better than last year At the conclusion of the meeting he will sail for Japan for a three or four months trip
