GOSSIP OF THE TURF TURFDiscussing Discussing the recent sale of Galtee Goatee More for 21000 the London Sportsman says The sale of Galtee Goatee More calls to mind other instances in which celebrated thoroughbreds have changed hands for extraordinarily big amounts The record is held by Ormonde Hormone who after being disposed of by the Duke of West ¬ minster to Senor Boucou Bounce for 12000 passed into the possession of the American gentleman Mr Macdonough Macedon for no less than 150 000 31250 The late Baron de Hirsch gave Sir Frederic Johnstone Johnston 15000 for Matchbox with contingencies and the horse was subsequently sold to the Austrian Govern ¬ ment meant for 18000 Common after his victory in the St Leger Leer was purchased for 15000 by Sir J Blundell Blunder Maple the celebrated stallion Blair Athol Atoll was sold for 12500 guineas in 1872 and another historic deal dealwas deal was that in connec connect ¬ tion ion with Doncaster Downcast who after winning the Alexandra Plate at Ascot in 1875 was parted with by Mr James Merry for 10000 to Mr R Peck who subsequently resold the horse for 14000 to the Duke of Westminster This was an unprecedented sum in those days but later years have familiarized us with transactions of much greatermagnitude greater though it will prob probe ¬ ably be a long time ere the sum paid in con ¬ nection unction with Ormonde Hormone will be equaled or sur slur ¬ passed These of course were all private deals but taking the instances where horseshavo horseshow been disposed of by public auction it may be men ¬ tioned toned that St Blaise Blains the Derby winner of 1883 was sold for 20000 at the disposal of Mr A Belmonts Belmont stud in New York toward the end of 1891 and another notable case is that of Meddler who as a 3yearold went for 14500 guineas at Newmarket Newark in 1893 1893Galtee Galtee Goatee More was sold with his engagements and it if intended for him to fill them if he goes on well before being retired to the stud in Russia
