HAWTHORNE RACING The tremendous rain storm of the early morn ¬ ing King flooded the track at Hawthorne and although its welltiled weltered surface was safe horse ¬ men used the blue pencil to such an extent that the card of six races was so disfigured as to be hardly recognizable The third race for which Storm King Dare II David Tenny Teeny Eddie Burke Dunois Dubois and Dr Sheppard were engaged was declared off the others all scratching away from Foster Bros1 big mudeater muleteer The sixth race a selling affair at six furlongs was also declared off and so to make up the five races of the day a onemile enemies selling race was sub ¬ stituted spitted stitutedOf spitted Of the fifty entries in the four original races twentyone twenty were scratched The second race was the only one greatly injured but here Jolly Roger Greatland Greenland Queen of Song Souchon Soupcon and Tulla Tulle Fonso Fonts declining the issue practically deprived the event of interest Despite tho thou un ¬ favorable outlook and quite outside the acci acc ¬ dents of racing there wore matters deterrent in nature yet a large crowd of persons appear ¬ ed at the course The sky cleared at 1 3Q pm and the afternoon was a most enjoyable one from the weather standpoint Where on Satur Saturn ¬ day last twentyone twenty bookmakers appeared in the betting ring proper there bad been twenty two but for lack away after going threeeighths and Black Fonso Fonts showed third to the last threesixteenths when dying away the race for third money was left to Sybaris Sybarite and Hosi Hoi the latter winning in a drive Miss Fairmount Falmouth absolutely was beaten one eight of a mile mileJinks mulleins Jinks a 2 to 5 shot had a tight race of it with Boney Bony Boy the pair outracing the others from the start The son of Blitzen Blitz if ridden by a stronger boy than Rose might have won even in the deep going next the fence the position he was in aftar afar reaching the home stretch Tur Turk ¬ ner near on the favorite worked tooth and nail clear in from the last eighth post and finally landed j Jinks a winner Approval getting off third was outrun by L Pillott Pilot Jr who was third to the last eighth At tho thou finish Doremus Dorms came from behind and beat Approval for the show money Sevens could never get to the horses mentioned mentionedLonHaskellonce LonHaskellonce a great pigeon shot and now owner of Elidadhas Elided all along said Someday my horse will win a good race And yesterday it came off Elidads Elias post price was 60 8 3 to 2 and some of the bookmakers said as the horses went to the post Strange as it may seem there is smart money going on Elidacl Heliacal However the post price would indicate that very little money was bet on the winner Elidad Elided got off to a good start for all but Mr Easton who was four lengths behind the bunch passing the judges the first time Around the first turn EJidad Jihad in the lead was joined by Her Favor lue blue two racing alongside to the middle of the upper turn where Her Favor fell back to Daisy F and Friar John which pair had run up the back stretch four lengths behind the leaders Elidad Elided at once began to open a big gap and at every stride he went further away so that at the finish ho won pulled to a walk by many yards Mr Ea ton had caught his horses at tho thou last quarter and passing on he was second home from Friar John by many lengths the last named horse just beating Her Favor Daisy F pulled up was at the last sixteenth post when Elidad Elided crossed the wire Peter Riley laid 150 to 1 for 15 against Elidad Elided W H Cherry and Frank Phillips had a bet down on the long shot Dick Speakman Seaman Willie Martins friend had 35 on onVitrola bonito Vitrola Vitriol went out in front for the fourth race but was caught at the far turn by Con Reagan who passing to the front was hard ridden in tho thou last 50 yards to stall off tho thou bold bid of Del Paso II who ran second the last quarter and one jump past the wire was in the lead of Con Reagan C H Whelan Wheelman was always third Brother Fred stayed in company for three eighths eighthsIn eighths In the last race King Bermuda led for three quarters where Swordsman passed him Here Reuben Rowett Rowe was third King Bermuda and Reuben Rowett Rowe stopped in the straight and Winslow passing them 150 yards out went hot after Swordsman who though brought to a drive managed to win Winslow beat the others off and Cant Danco Dance plugging along through the mud outstayed the tiring lot that had made the pace and ran third Jay Bird was second to King Bermuda for a quarter then fell away stride by stride Sister Adele finished abso abs ¬ lutely lately lutelyIn utterly In the report of the disqualification of Cherry Leaf and Nathanson Nathan in favor of Madrilene Marlene August 11 it was stated that Mr T C McDowell owner of Madrilene Marlene was called into the judges stand before the decision was made The gentleman referred to said yesterday I was not in the judges stand on the occasion men ¬ tioned toned never had an idea of making any kick and as far as I know no claim for foul was lodged lodgedMr lodged Mr J F Caldwell one of Americas veteran starters took his position at Hawthorne Mon ¬ day and will there touch off the machine for the balance of the meeting It seems Caldwell was engaged for Hawthorne six months ago but the management being asked by horse owners and trainers to give W F Bruen Braun a weeks trial employed the young starter with the permission of Mr Caldwell Bruens Bruges work was entirely satisfactory to the Haw ¬ thorne thorn officials and the public concurred in ap ¬ plauding lauding his efforts Mr Caldwells Caldwell starting yesterday was nearly perfection Bad actors at the post will be barred until they are schooled to break with the others
