TRAINER IKIGBS VIKINGS PLANS PLANSEugene Eugene Leighs Sleighs management of the string of twoyearolds toeholds placed in hi charge by Mrs E O Peppor Pepper last spring was a really remarkable fea fear ¬ ture turret of the racing season of 1898 and can long bo to him justly a source of pride He arrived in Cincinnati Thursday and of his career this year and his plans for 1899 the Enquirer says saysMr says Mr Leighs Sleighs time and attention the past year were almost entirely devoted to training and racing a string of twoyearolds toeholds for Mrs E O Pepper As a result of his skilful and intelli Intel ¬ gent work Mrs Pepper has the distinction of being the only American woman that has cam ¬ paigned pained a stable of horses and made a success of it her first season seasonMr season Mr Leigh started out at Newport in the spring with thirteen twoyearolds toeholds the prop ¬ erty arty of the mistress of Meadowthorpe Meadow all of which had beon bon bred at the Pepper establish ¬ ment meant near Lexington When the stable went to Washington Park all bnt bent five of the horses had boon sold the five that still continuetlrtc continental carry the Pepper colors at the big Chicago meeting and subsequently in the east being Kentucky Colonel Black Venus King Barley ¬ corn Ned Wickes Wickets and Satin Slipper These the pick of the lot that had left Lexington in the spring after a successful season on the eastern tracks were sold to good advantage recently at public sale From the time that they began racing at Newport until the stable was finally wound up recently tho thou horses that composed it had won in purges and stakes 35 000 The horses that had beon bon sold realized all told 30 000 leaving a neat profit for Mrs Pepper of 50 000 for the season seasonIt season It is not to be inferred from the fact that all the horses which raced in her name the past season were sold that Mrs Pepper will not be represented on the turf again next season She will start out again next year with nearly or quite as big a string as she had at the outset of the present season She has at Moadowthorpe sixteen promising yearlings a dozen by the suc such ¬ cessful cess sire Kantaka Kanaka three by Perblaise Pearlier and one by Kingston From these a stable will be established for next season and as this year Mr Leigh will do tho thou training an arrangement to that effect having already been entered into by Mrs Pepper and himself himselfHe himself He will have quite a string of youngsters on the turf as in addition to tho thou Pepper lot ho will have a bunch of his own He has thirty yearlings at Lexington and from these he will secure his own individual stable It is his present intention to pick from the two lots about twenty of the best figuring from looks and breeding and these will be sent to the Brooklyn track this winter and bo got ready for tho thou eastern campaign With tho thou best of the others Mr Leigh 7ill bein begin his seasons racing at Newport He has headed the list of winning owners at every meeting at the Campbell County track and he hopes to duplicate his previous successes next spring Newport will be tho thou only track in the west at which he will race He has not made a single entry in west ¬ ern Bern stakes and he says that he does not intend to do so He will have only twoyearolds toeholds in his stable next season Ho does not want any old horses as he wants to educate his horses himself He is an acknowledged successful twoyearold toehold trainer and ha says he would rather train ten twoyearolds toeholds than one old horse horseMr hoarser Mr Leigh has taken up his residonco residence in the east and the purpose of his present visit is to have a look at his own and tho thou Pepper year ¬ lings and also to attend the coming thorough ¬ bred sales at Lexington to be held by Easton and by Messrs Messes Woodard Woodward Shanklin Shackling beginning on the 21at instant
