WESTERN STAKES TO CLOSE. There is every indication that this is to be a very busy and prosperous year for the owners of racehorses. The stake events recently closed by the Coney Island, Brooklyn and New Memphis jockey Clubs show a very gratifying in-crease of entries over last year, giving assurance of highly interesting meetings to come over their respective tracks. In this connection the attention of owners is called to the fact the date for closing entries to the stakes of three of the leading racing organizations of the west is near at hand. January 14, barely a week distant, the attractive array proffered by the St. Louis and Latonia JockeylClubs closes and on the Monday following entries close to the New Louisville Jockey Club stakes. The events offered by the St. Louis Fair Association are: For two-year-olds : Debutante Stakes, fillies, ,500 guaranteed; 4 1-2 furlongs. Kindergarten Stakes, colts and geldings, 81,500 guaranteed; 5-8 mile. Junior Championship Stakes, 82,000 guaranteed; 51-2 furlongs. Brewers Stakes, handicap, ,500 guaranteed; 3-4 mile. Missouri Stakes, selling, ,500 guaranteed; 3-4 mile. Ozark Stakes, ,500 guaranteed; 3-4 mile. Chrysanthemum Stakes, ,500 guaranteed; 1 mile. For three-year-olds : St. Louis Derby of 1900, ,000 added; 1 1-2 miles. Golden Rod Stakes, selling. ,500 guaranteed ; 7-8 mile. For three-year-olds and upward : Inaugural Handicap, ,000 guaranteed; 1 mile. Club Members Handieap, ,500 guaranteed; 1 1-4 miles. Mississippi Valley Stakes, selling, ,500 guaranteed: 1 mile. Meramec Stakes, selling, ,500 guaranteed; ; 1 mile. Laurel Handicap, ,500 guaranteed; 3-4 mile. Independence Handicap, ,500 guaranteed; : 1 3-16 miles. Mound City Stakes, selling, ,500 guaranteed ; 1 1-8 miles. For all ages : Memorial Handicap, ,500 guaranteed; 51-2 ; furlongs. ; : ; Autumn Stakes, selling, ,500 guaranteed; 6 1-2 furlongs. Besides the foregoing stakes which close January 14, the club also advertises the St. Louis Derby of 1902, to close February 1, under conditions widely different from those which heretofore have characterized this valuable and important three-year-old event. In its new guise it will be practically a produce stake: Entry for February 1 is for mares and as it is free entry it seems that all the broodmares of the country should be nominated. January 1, 1900, the first liability, accrues in a declaration fee for foals. The second declaration of 0 falls due January 1, 1901. The stake is to be reopened May 1, 1901 and January 1, 1902 for entries of youngsters whose dams were not nominated. All around it is a very ingeniously conceived stake designed to make the St. Louis Derby from 1902 onward worth 5,000 or more to the winning horse. The stakes offered by the Latonia Jockey Club comprise seven for the spring meeting of 1899, three for the autumn meeting of 1899, and the Derby, Oaks and Himyar Stakes of 1900. For the spring meeting of this year the events are: "For two-yoar-olds : " Clipsetta Stakes, fillies, 00 added, 5-8 mile. Harold Stakes, colts, 00 added, 5-8 mile. Sensation Stakes, ,000 added, 3-4 mile. For three-year-olds : Latonia Spring Prize, ,200 added, 1 1-8 miles. For three-year-olds and upward: Tobacco Stakes, selling, 00 added, 1 mile. Decoration Handicap, ,500 added, 1 1-8 miles. Cincinnati Hotel Handicap, ,200 added, 1 I- 16 miles. The stakes for the autumn meeting are all for two-year-olds and are as follows: Kimball Stakes, colts, S700 added, S-4 mile. Zoo Zoo Stakes, fillies, 00 added, 34 mile. Kentucky Central Stakes, 00 added, 1 mile. The stakes for 1900 are these: The Latonia Derby, three-year-olds, ,500 added, 1 1-2 miles. The Latonia Oaks, three-year-old fillies, ,250 added, 1 1-4 miles. Himyar Stakes, three-year-olds, ,500 added, I I- 8 miles. These are all old and well established stakes, well known to turfmen in their terms and racing traditions. Latonia is a favorite track with the owners of the west, and the experience of past years should guarantee the liberal support these rich stakes amply deserve. The Louisville stakes that close Monday, January 16 are eight in number and well devised to meet all requirements as to different ages and classes of horses. They are as follows; For two-year olds : Debutante Stakes, fillies, ,300 guaranteed, 1-2 mile. Wenonah Stakes, colts and geldings, ,300 guaranteed, 4 1-2 furlongs. Juvenile Stakes, selling, ,250 guaranteed, 5-8 mile. For three-year-olds. Blue Grass Stakes, ,300 guaranteed, 6 1-2 furlongs. Mademoiselle Stakes, fillies, ,500 guaranteed, 7-8 mile. Premier Stakes, ,300 guaranteed, 1 mile. For three-year-olds and upward: Frank Fehr Stakes, ,300 guaranteed, 1 mile. Louisville Handicap, ,500 guaranteed, 1 1-16 miles. The stakes here offered by these three strong clubs insure the distribution of a very large aggregate of money among the owners of the west and those who possess good horses and do not enter them will have only themselves to blame if afterward the discovery comes about that their horses could surely have won some portion of these rich offerings.
