NOTES OF THE TURF. Saturdays San Francisco Chronicle says: "Judging by the way Miss Marion won yesterday, it would certainly appear that she should have had an unbeaten record in California. A comparison of the time in her race with the others shows her to be an extremely fast filly. She ran the first half mile yesterday in 491. Miss Marion will be especially prepared for the California Oaks." James A. Murphy, of Chicago, yesterday sold through the Fasig-Tipton Co., of New York, to Marcus Daly, the chestnut mare, Emily, by Prince Regent Barbara, trotting record 2:11. She was one of the best racemaresin the grand circuit of 1897. She will be used as a broodmare at the Bitter Boot Stock Farm, Hamilton, Mont. A dispatch from Lexington to yesterdays Enquirer says: "The first thoroughbred foal reported in the Blue Grass region this year was dropped at Mr. August Belmonts Nursery Stud Sunday night. It is a very healthy filly by Henry of Navarre, out of Chantres3,by Longfellow." Bookmakers complain that the public principally confine their speculation to Thorpe and Piggott. The only deduction to be drawn from this statement of fact is that the public has confidence in the honesty of Piggott and Thorpe. San Francisco Chronicle. It is not likely that there will be any racing in Montana this year. The Anaconda track may be sold for a new copper smelting plant. J. Delong, well-known as a trainer of racehorses, died yesterday at his home near Niles, Mich.
