NOTES OF THE TURF. Concerning the ruling off of the steeplechase jockey Burns at San Francisco, the Examiner says: "Tom Burns, who had the mount on Lord Chesterfield was ruled off the turf for life. He deliberately pulled Chesterfield up just as soon as the start was made and did not even try to take the first jump with the horse. Owner Aleck Shields complained of Burns actions and stated, further, that the horse was thoroughly fit, had gone the course in fine shape and that he Shields, had bet on him to win in quite a large amount. Thereupon the judges concluded to rule Burns off. The liberties taken with this good jumper by the bookies seemed to indicate that all was not well." The entry of Gratify is to be refused hereafter at Oakland. The judges were not pleased with his running last Monday, when he was a hot favorite but a very cold performer. Gratify was a smashing good 2-year-old but his legs are now so infirm that he is but a racing wreck. Ex-Jockey H, Barger, who used to ride for the famous Missouri turfman, William Mulkey, is back from Manila. He enlisted in a Ne- braska regiment and saw some lively times in the Philippines. Tuesdays San Francisco Chronicle says: Dan Honig is seriously ill at his home. He has a complication of diseases and at one time was threatened with paralysis.
