NOTES OF THE TURF. The running of the Oaks at Ingleside today will dispose of the principal event of the California tnrf for fillies. The corresponding event for colts and fillies, the California Derby, is set for decision March 18, and San Francisco turf speculation is already beginning to center about the race. First Tenor, Sam McKeever, Survivor, Olinthns, Corsini and Formero are deemed the most formidable candidates and all are to receive special and careful training for the event. Dr. Crowley, the famous expert and veterinary of St. Louis, after an examination of the youngsters at Barney Schreibers farm, Woodlands, says that the Lissak Caroline Hamilton colt is the star 2-year-old there. He also thinks pretty well of First Shot and a colt by Burlington. Crowley owns a pretty good Foul Shot colt, ont of a half sister to Nanki Pooh. Senator Rollins of St. Louis, has introduced a bill in the Missouri legislature which allows poolselling and bookmaking by private individuals and betting by the Paris mntuel machine, on racetracks within inclosnres. It virtually repeals the horse breeders law, licensing poolsolling and bookmaking on racetracks during three months each year. Rome Respass says that the horses at Oakley are going along in their training in spite of the heavy snow which now covers the track. The trainers work their horses without plates on, and the flyers gallop as well over the frozen ground as they would on a hard, dry track in the winter time. Cincinnati Enquirer. The Burns Handicap winner of 1897, Ruinart, has been doing well of late and may be seen at the post before the present Ingleside meeting comes to a close. It is not likely though that his infirm legs will permit him to be sent to the post often. Tod Sloan was to have left San Francisco for the east Thursday. He scoffs at the story of his having made a big winning in the New York stock market recently; W. H. C , North Greenfield, Wis. No price on Strongoli in the third race of February 3, at Oakland, Cal., was wired by our correspondent. Secretary Gratz Hanly is in New Orleans looking after matters tending t promote the success of the Nowport spring meeting. President Thos. H. Williams, Jr., subscribed 50 to the Carter monument fund in behalf of the California Jockey Club. There is a letter at this office for W. P. Maxwell.
