NOTES OF THE TURF. With such fast and staying horses as David Tenny, Buckwa, What er Lou, Adolpli Spreck-els, The Bachelor and Mistleton named to start in the four mile journey for the Thornton Stakes at Oakland this afternoon no one need bo surprised if all records at the distance are wiped out. At any rate a very great race is in prospect. Last year Judge Denny, with 115 pounds in the saddle, won this event running the distance in 7:201, Marplot, 86, finishing second and The Bachelor, 112, third. This year higher class horses are in contention, and the track is perhaps the fastest in the country. If all the nine named to start go to the post it will be a remarkable thing in the history of four mile racing. J. Naglee Burks big sprinter Bellicoso burst a blood vessel and died at the Oakland track Sunday. He was by Peel Janet N., and when at his best was a very fast horse as his record of seven furlongs in 1 :26 with 120 pounds up, made over the old Bay District track attests. As a two-year-old he won the Kenwood Stakes at Washington Park defeating Handsome, Laureate, Salvation, Montre, Rey del Careres, Sun Up and Silver. Record making and breaking is going on at a great rate over the Oakland track. Yesterday Dunois clipped a full second from the record at seven and a half furlongs. It was previously held by Mamie Scott, she having gone the distance in 1 over the Bay District track October 17. 1895. It is said that most of the young horses stabled at Ingleside are coughing. The cold spell following so quickly on the summer-like heat of a couple of weeks ago, is said to be responsible for the ailment, which is of a mild type. Mr. W. C. Whitneys first foal of his own breeding was dropped at La Belle Farm Monday last. It is a bay colt by Meddler Kildeer and is pronounced an extra fine looker by competent judges. Billy Lakeland recently visited the Bitter Root stock farm and selected seven two-year-olds and Isidor to take oast. Scottish Chieftain and sevaral other youngsters will be sent on later. Jockey C. Sloan haB been suspended by the judges at Oakland, pending an investigation of the race in which Abuse was beaten;.by Tammany Hall II. John J. McCafferty has sold Loiterer, 4, by Mardoa Lucille, to John Powers, of Memphis, Tenn,, who is forming a racing stable. A. R. L St. Louis, Mo. The top weight horse of the Inaugural Handicap of 1893 was Sat-tuma, 120 pounds.
