THE CALIFORNIA SITUATION. There is good reason for believing that the California legislature will relieve San Francisco racing. A bill has been put into the California senate which legalizes racing and its speculation. It will be backed by the best of influences in the state. John Mackey, superintendent of Rancho del Paso is the leader in an influential movement by petition, which declares that the ordinance passed by the San Francisco supervisors will ruin the industry of raising thoroughbred horses one which yields millions to California every year. There ia some humor in the police action against Ingleside betting. Chief of police Lees fell into a trap set for him by attorney Henry Ash Wednesday. Hugh L. Jones, bookmaker and horse-owner, was arrested again for no other offense than displaying odds against horses that were scratched. No offense in the eyes of the law was committed and Lees will have some trouble saving the city from a damage suit.
