1 . PROSPECTS AT MEMPHIS. A competent observer who has been in Memphis for some time writes to Daily Racing Foeii as follows concerning the horses now in training for the leading events of the coming meeting at Montgomery Park: Memphis, Tenn., March 26. Tho opening of the nineteenth annual spring meeting of tho New Memphis Jockey Club is loss than two weeks off. Over five hundred crack thoroughbreds are already stabled at the track, while others are coming from Louisville, Nashville, New Orleans, Little Rock and other points. Every available stall within a radius of a mile of the park has been engaged and secretary Macfarlan recently secured permission to stable outside horses at Billings Park, a half mile trotting track, which can accommodate two hundred horses. Tho Montgomery Handicap will be decided on the opening day. Indications point to the following starters : Algol 126 Imp 114 Manuel 107 Clay Poyntor 105 George B. Cox 104 Cherry Leaf 103 Crocket 103 Banished 102 J H. C 102 KittieB 100 Dunois 100 Jolly Roger 100 George Krats 100 Bella of Memphis.. 98 Buckvidere 98 Algol is in good condition a mile in 1 :47 galloping is his best work. Manuels prep has been about the same, Dunois is already fit as a fiddle, as aro Clay Poyntor, Cherry Leaf, J. H.C. and Belle of Memphis. George Krats has worked remarkably well, Imp is still at Chilli-cothe, Ohio; Buckvidere, Crocket, George B. Cox and Banished have been working faithfully and are on edge to receive the final trial in a few days. The coming week will see them all set down, and the question asked them: "Will you do?" On Monday following tho Montgomory, the Tennessee Oaks will bo run. The probable starters are: Freak 117 Matanza 117 Souchon 117 Gay Pamienno 117 May dOr 117 Florence Austin.. ..117 OurNellio 117 Chimura 117 May Hempstead ....117 Lizzie Kelly 117 P. Tomlinson has tho E. S. Gardner filly Freak in good condition. J. J. Marklein trains Matanza and though sho looks a trifle thin her trainer is confident of her winning.. Stover thinks Lizzie Kelly has only Souchon to fear, while T. J. McHales Onr Nellie looks and acta good. Dick Stickneys orders are to send Florence Austin to the post as fit as he can make her. Abe Cahn keeps May dOr under cover but will have her ready in time. Ed Brown, Robeit Tucker and H. Engene Leigh have Souchon, Gay Farisienne and May Hempstead at Louisville, but have indicated that they will send their charges after tho Tennessee Oaks. The third important event of the meeting is the Tennessee Derby, worth something like ,000 to the winner. The probabilities are: W. Overton 122 The Kentuckian . ..122 Fausturo 122 Tho Barrister 122 Onomastus 122 Deering 122 Hittick 122 Sir Gatian 122 Loo Planter 122 The Pride 119 The Kentuckian is still favorite. After he had breezed a milo in 1:47 his stock wont up. It had been rumored about the track that tha son of Pirate of Penzance was only a sprinter, but his easy breeze of a mile turned tho tide of sentiment. W. Overton has done nothing re- markable in tho way of work, but Georgo Walker, Lis trainer, seems to think the colt will win easy. Onomastus, Loo Planter, Fausturo, The Barrister, Sir Gatian and The Pride are going along nicely, but no attempt has been made to give them any real hard work, their respective trainers being satisfied to let them 1 take their time,
