GREAT BE MPS FAST RACE. Saturday was a perfect, afternoon for racing and the Hawthorne track had all it could do to accommodate the immense ha.f-holiday crowd that went to the handsome course. Besides an attractive program the association offered as an additional feature a description of the Suburban Handicap. When Imp was announced the winner and Bannock ourn second a crash of applause rant the air. Both are western horses that have won notable races in Chicago and the crowd held their success to be a matter for local congratulations and jubilated accordingly. A handicap atone mile and a selling race at the popular distance of one mile and a half were the racing features, and both furnished pleasing contests, Eight faced the starter in the handicap end Senator Bland was made favorite at 8 to 5. He was heavily bicked, but for that matter so was nearly every other horse in the race. To a good start Bouey Boy broke in front and stayed there through the first half The early pace was terrific, the first half being reeled off in :48i and the five furlongs in 1 :014. This ccoked Boney Boys goose, and Moroni, taking up the running, was in front at the three-quarters, which was i topped in 1:131. Bounding into the stretch there was a general closing np. and when straightened away Great Bend was a length in the lead. Boney Boy, driving and staggering, was second, and Tenby, who had been well placed all the way, was third. At the eighth post Brigade came from the rear with a *tremen ions rush and, bumpiughis way through, set sail for Great Bend; bat the latter had something iu reserve, and when Dupee got ready he sent the sou of St. Blaise-Sasqnehanna along, winning with considerable in reserve. Brigade finished second, Tenby third and Branch fourth. After weighing in Bloss claimed foul against Brigade and it was allowed. This moved Teaby and Branch up a peg. Tom Hayes cut a "good thing" loose in the first race. His Onondaga — Roseola colt. Bed Cross, had worked fast and was in a soft spot. The colt opened at 4 to 1 but was backed down to 8 to 5. There was nothing to the race but Bed Cross. He bioke fifth, took his time about going to the front and won cleverly from Mont I Eegle. Zaza, who had a very rough journey, was third. Coljnel Eades scored a lucky win iu the second race. He got through on the rail in the . stiotch and efter a hard drive beat Eruest ; Wiles and Einer about a length. The latter two both should have beaten Colonel Eades. They collided at the start and had bad racing luck geneially. The fifth and sixth events furnished rousiDg r finishes. The Winner after a long hard driva barely got up in time to nose Helens Pet out in i the fifth, and old Meddler, long overdue, beat i Afamada for the sixth. Rutter roda Meddler r and cleaily outtiuished Beauchamp on Afamada. Had Beauchamp been wide awake he 3 would have won. Jockey Eyerett will ba on hand Monday. He 9 will be a great addition to the riding talent t which is not of the best at present. H. T. Pierce was also a new arrival. He has s a b:g string, including Traversers sister, Elizabeth Klein. "Bod" Tucker arrived at the track with _ Isabey, DeeriDg, Jolly Roger and five others.
