CRACK FILLIES NJI TO 51EEI. The effort to briDg about a special race, July 1, between the crack fillies May Hempstead and Admiration, together with such colts as their owners might deem fast enough to compete with the two flying young mares, seems to have fallen through after having been considered almost a surety. A gossiping dispatch from New York sayB of the matter. Mr. Paget says "If I should put Admiration in such a race and win it, the filly would incur a big penalty in fnture events. I think that I see more in running her in overnight races, such as she won yesterday, than in a race worth ,500 or ,000. I also object to sending Admiration around the turn ut Shoopshead Bay. If the race wore at a mile out of the chute I might think better of it. My objection to sending Admiration around the turn is not, however, the main one. The one which I fiist gave is more important. Mr. Norton has so much cenfidfnee in 1 lie prowess of Msy Hempstead that he offered to bet 20.00 on the side that she can beat Admiration. CbarleB T, Patterson, who developed and told May Hempstead to Mr. Norton, believes that she could beat Admiration, and would back her in case the two fillies came together. Will Wallace also said that lie would like to take the May Hempstead end of a big bet if such a race should be pulled off. "Jack Joyner, who is handlirg Perry Belmonts champion three-year-old. Ethelbert, said Ethelbert cculd beat both Admiration snd May Hempstead, but be could cot afford to take the chance just now. "If I should win such a race with Ethelbert," said Joyner, this morning, "the colt would have to carry a five pound penalty in the Realization. Such a censlty might cause him to ba beaten in a race that we are anxious to win. I am so careful with Ethelbert just now that I am a bit afraid to put bim in an ordinary over-night race, much as he needs one in his preparation for ilia Realization. He might break down."
