TEX BY DEFEATS CHERRY LEAF. i That Sidney Bender has a good horse in Tonby is no longer a matter of donbt in the minds of those who saw him win the fourth race at Harlem yesterday from John Baker and Cherry Leaf. The race was at a mile and a sixteenth, and tho conditions were such that Cherry Leaf and John Baker carried 104 pounds each, while Tenby only had 102. It was a hot betting race, Cherry Leaf being the favorite and carrying a big, healthy stable commission. The public stuck to Tenby and so did the "knowing ones" who had seen both horses work. John Baker was held at 10 to 1 to win and 6 to 5 for the place. The pikers fairly killed this, thinking he would surely split the pair and also have a chance to win. Plantain was the outsider. It did not take Starter Dwyer long to get the quartette away, with Plantain in front, Cherry Leaf second and John Baker third. Nutt, who rode Tenby, had instructions to lay away with him and he followed his orders to perfection. Plantain sot the pace around the first tarn but down the backstretch John Baker went to the iront. He had everything his own way until the far turn as made when Crowhurst, on Cherry Leaf, made his move and at the three-eighths post tho pair were racing like a team. In the meantime Nutt was trailing along about three or four langfhs back of Plantain and he did not seem to be at all alarmed when Cherry Leaf moved upv Just before the stretch was reached, however, he called on Tenby and the Bender horse shot by Plantain and got within striking distance of the leaders quicker than a flash. In making the turn into the stretch Cherry Leaf and John Baker swung wide, and Nutt, seeing the opening on the rail, started through. He got abaut half way up when the other boys pulled in on him, and for an instant it was 10 to 1 against Tenby. Nutt, however, had presence of mind enough not to remain in the pocket and immediately pulled out and went around, All this, of course, cost considerable ground, but Tenby was bo much the best that he could afford it, and coming down the stretch ou the outside like a wild horse he got to and passed Ch erry Leaf and John Baker fifty yards out and won handsomely by about a half length. This horse has improved wonderfully since he has baen in Benders hands, and after the race a flittering offer was refused for him. "Hardy " Durham with all his wisdom let his Sleipner Thanks two-year-old Martin Duke go to the post unbacked at 20 to 1. The youngster got a good Bend-off and always being in a good position stood a long, hard arive through the stratch gam ely and won by a narrow margin from Mont Eagle. Eocklight was backed for a good thing but he could not or would not run f ast enouarh to gat oat of his own way, and fin-ished far back. Mr. Durham, again as wise aB he was before the first race, sent Mayme M. M. to the post in the Becond event so stiff and sore that she could hardly walk 1st alone run her best race. The filly was naturally one of the choices, and of course the public suffered. She opened at 2 to 1 and was backed down to 11 to 5. After getting awayina jam Mayme M.M. plodded along in . the rear division until the stretch was reached. . By this tima she was baginning to warm up and . in the last quarter was able to run some. The i consequence was she finished third. Princess Murphy won the race by a whisker fro m Bosa-vannan. The speed handicap went to Helens Pet. This filly is one of the fa9to3t horses at the track and seems to run a batter race each time out. Heretofore she has shown a disposition to quit when challenged, but in this raje sha i stalled off Maceos rush in the stretch, and, although driving, was going away at the finish. Unsightly seemed on form to be a certainty in the two-year-old race, but after Beauchamp had meesed her about in a wretched manner she could do no better than finish third to Maharajah and Zaza. Mizpah, long overdue, won the last race quite handily from Serrano. The latter was the favorite and ran a good race as far as he went, but when the pinch came tired as if Bhort. Mizpah was heavily backed and ran a cracking good race. Jenkins had him on the extreme outside all the way and covered much more ground than anything else in the race.
