NOTES OF THE TURF. The great two-year-old The Conqueror, who liaB been laid up ever since he was beaten in the Junior Championship by Sam Phillips, with a quarter crack, has practically grown a new hoof, and is now pretty near ready to Btart in galloping again. His trainer, Paddy Tomlinson, stated Monday that it was hardly probable the colt would be ready to start in either of the two juvenile stakes to be run at the Fair Grounds this month, although there is a chance that the colt will be ready to run in the Chrysanthemum. Tomlinson is confident that The Conqueror will beat Sam Phillips the next time they book up. According to Tomlinson, The Conqueror worked three-quarters of a mile at the Fair Grounds with over 120 pounds on his back in 1 :14i. This work is enough to stamp the colt as being one of the great juveniles of the year. "Last fall, when he was broken, Verdinst promised to make one of the great two-year-olds of the present racing season," said W. F. Schnlte recently. "This colt is a half brother to Alleviate, who won a lot of races for me in her two-year-old form. I own Per-adventure the dam of Alleviate and Verdinst, and bred both horses. At the time my trainer broke Verdinst at the Louisville track, Charlie Patterson was there with all his crackB, including Prince of Melbourne and Kentucky. Verdinst showed bettdr than either of Pattersons cracks, and I thought the colt would win a lot of races in his two-year-old form. He is still a maiden, however, and I have no idea whether he will ever win a race for me. The failure of thiB colt to pan out illustrates the glorious uncertainty j of the turf." Fall running meetings will be held at Fort Erie, Canada, August 30 to September 20. and at Windsor, Canada, September 23 to October 14.
