GOSSIP OV THE TDKF, Though what is considered the "regular" racing season in California does not begin until the two great jockey clnbs that have their tracks in the vicinity of San Francisco are ready to throw their gates open to the public, it is not to bo inferred that California is devoid of good racing until that period arrives. Quite a number of meetings of interest are given at other points in the state during the summer and autumn. About the most import ant is that given in connection with the California State Fair at Sacramento, which extends from September 4 to 16 inclusive. Mr. Adolph Spreckels is president of the society and Peter J. Shields secretary. Ton stakes have baen announced for the meeting next month as follows: For Iwo-year-olds: Tho California Annual Stake, 00 added; 3-4 mile. The Autamn Handicap, 300 added; 1 mile. The Shaf ter Selling Stake, S300 added ; 3 4 mile. The Sunny Slope Stake Allies, 300 added; 3-8 mile. For three-year-olds: The Dewoy Selling Stakes, 00 added; 1 mile. For all ages: The Flash Stakes, C0 added: 34 mile. For tbree-year-olds and upward: The Vinctor Stakes, S300 added; 1 mile. The Capital City Stakes, C0 added ; 1 1-8 miles. The Favorite Stakes,S350 added; 1 1-4 miles. The Ladies Stakes mare3 and fillies, 00 added; 1 1-16 miles. Turfmen who design taking their horses to the coast early, will find it to their interest to make entries in these stakes and stop over in Sacramento where tho State Pair Grounds afford remarkably good training quarters. Liberal purses for the runners are also given to which entrance is free. The stakes close August 15 and entries should be addressed to Peter J. Shields, secretary, Sacramento, California. The yearlings of Applegate and McMeekin are to be auld in the paddock at Hawthorne Saturday, August 12, and not at the Union Stock Tarda. The sale begins promptly at 12:30 p. m. and those wishing to bid on the youngsters must go to the track on the street cars and not wait for the trains, as the sale will probably ba over by the time the first train arrives. Gibraltar, who has been laid up for several weeks with a sore mouth, is ready for business again. As soon as he gets on hia winning stride the Maffitt string will be in shape to hold its own with any stable on the western circuit. Tom Collins. Fireside, Osric II., Duke of Melbourne, Sir Bolla and Gibraltar have been tho breadwinners of the stable, although Gibraltar and Tom Collins have both been on the shelf more or less all season.
