j BOANERGES A GOOD JUMPER. It was scorching hot and the wind blew a gale yesterday at Hawthorne, but aside from preventing fast time tho dieagieeable weather had no bad effect on tho sport and the racing was by far the best of any day so far this week. An attractive card was offered and a record-breaking crowd for the middle of the week was on hand. A steeplechase over the short course was probably the main attraction. Ten started in the cross-country event and aside from three horses bolting, it was a clean race, as no horse fell and no accident happened. Boanerges, at 20 to 1 won and surprised everyone, even to the jockey who rode him and "Bishop" Poole, his owner. The horse was always a rogue on the flat and it may be that ho has started in the same rolo over the sticks. He was tried at the game Monday, but proved a rank failure and was put in yesterday to fill up more than anything else. To say he fenced well would not be giving Boanorges the compliment duo him. He fairly Hew and as he had the most speed on the fiat, there was nothing to it as far as a contest was concerned. The old horse led from start to finish, and, although hard punished at the end, he won off by himself. Jockeys OBrien and Stewart, who rode Che-nier and Pommery Sec respectively, were sharply scored by Judge Rees after the race. Both horses bolted, and the boys, instead of goiog back to where their mounts made the mistake, kept on and went the course. Chenier finished second and Pommery Bee fourth, but tho judges took no notice whatever of them in officially placing the finish. The third, a three-quarter, high-priced selling race, furnished one of the most interesting contests ever witnessed on the Cicero course. Newsgatherer, Montgomery, Flora Louise, Sim W, and Dutch Comedian flashed by the wire so close together that it was impossible for any but tbe judges to separate them. There was a lot of speedy ones in this race, and down the backstretcb, with the wind to their backs, they made very fast time. The first half was run in. 47 i seconds and the five furlongs in one minute flat. From the eighth post to the wire they stopped badly, but everything considered, tha race was a fast one, the three-quarters being run in 1:131. Newsgatherer on the extreme inside and excellently ridden by Vandusen got the verdict. It was another case of a big, strong boy ontfinishiiig the lighter ones. Newsgath-erers race was such an improvement over hia last one that it set the gossips agoing and there was no end of scandalous talk among them. Miss Ethel McGnigans sweot filly Unsightly ran ono 01 her iiest races and scored a handsome victory in the five-furlong two-year-old evont. This filly evidently likes Hawthorne better than she does Harlem, and there ia where tho runs her bast races. In this event the filly was bumped and jostled and treated roughly in general but she stood the treatment like an aristocrat, and bumpiLg her way through in the stretch won by about a length. In pulliLig up the filly wrenched Lor anklo and camo back to tho siaud quito lame. It would ba a pity if sncu u fine nlly as this happened to go amiss wueu aha is at her best, and oapeciaily as tha fall of the year is noar at hand. Sorruuo is "Ha ..kins Uoss" now and the way he disposed of u good hold in the last race won for Lim uittuy new friends. Ha carried 109 poauus and eaoily scored a mile in l:lUl. This follow is liable to smash ttie mile record boforo the season is over. "Farmor" Kugouo Leigh, although in New CONTINDKD ON UKUOND PAUB. BOANERGES A GOOD JUMPER. Continued from 1st Page. York, won a race and also a bet on his filly Tildee in the opening four and a half furlong scramble for maiden two-year-olds. The filly carried 117 pounds and Caywood and won as she pleased. G. W. Poole is training the filly for Mr. Leigh, There was a big bunch of ordinary selling platers in the second race and Lucille Bramble, the 2i to 1 favorite, won in a hard drive from Cheesemite and Peter McCue. The winner belongs to John Brenock and it was his first win of the season, although he has quite an extensive string. W. B. Sink, Jr. was a visitor at the track. Bis horses, including Formero, will arrive some time this week. Ex-jockey Clancy got in from Canada with his good filly Tillie W.
