"WINNERS AT HAWTHORNE. Ed Corrigans big grey gelding, Colonel Bart-lett, won the steeplechase at Hawthorne yester- t day, making it two wins out of two starts for the ex-master of the beautiful course. Colonel Bartlett is by Riley out of Fanchette, and both e Ilia "daddy" and his "mammy" raced on local t tracks, consequently this made him all the e more popular and the big crowd seemed greatly c pleased when the Colonel came cantering home c an easy winner. In the betting Colonel Bartlett j -was the favorite and he was heavily backed, c It was rumored that it would be impossible for jockey Doane to keep the big fellow from run- t ning nut of the course and this helped to make 1 a price against him. Doaue kept him in the i course all right enough and rode a Ekillful I race. The gelding had speed galore and from i the start he led all the way and was never in -trouble. i Colonel Bartlett fences to perfection and i judging from this race he can beat anything around here at the jumping game. Doano 1 could have won away off by himself had he so i chosen, but he drew the finish fine and at the i -wire was only a half length in front of Marble, Necedah and Gypceiver, who were lapped on. i If bver there was a false price offered againBt i a borae the 15 to 1 quoted againBt Little Singer : in the last event wa3 one. This mara beat : about the same bunch of horses at the same . distance at Harlem Saturday and there was no . reason to believe that she would not repeat which Bhe did and showed more quality than she did in her last race. Master Mitchell rode Little Singer and after getting off in front made a runaway race of it. The mare opened up a gap of four lengths going the first three-quarters and eight lengths going the first seven furlongs. Then, she began to lira bat the others were legweary, too, and the consequence was she loafed home three and a half lengths in the lead. Between Jackanapes and Periwig there was a hot contest for the place and the latter got the decision by a nose. Mr. W. F. Bchulte seems to have a stablo full of acrobats, and in the second race Alleviate turned a most perfect form somersault. The last time this filly started Mr. Schulte backed hor heavily to show at even money, but she ran a bad race and finished far baok. This performance soured Mr. Schulte on the filly, and yesterday when she won he did not bet on her. After the race there was some ugly talk about the ranning of Mr. Schultes horse. This was entirely out of line, for Mr. Schulte is a man who , likes to see his horses run and win and is always t trying. He breedB all the horses he races, and , is in the business simply for sport and is not a gambler. Alleviate to win had to run one of ; her best races, and sho did. Conley laid away , with her to the stretch, and then came with a L rush. He got to Montgomery at the eighth l post, and from there home simply hand rode the , filly. She baat Montgomery a half length, and he was a length in front of the 8 to 5 favorite , Georgie. Tom Barretts colt, Tommy OBrien, won the first race in a terrific drive by a nose from Highland Lad. Nutt rode Tommy OBrien and y clearly ontfiniahed McJoynt. After Livadia won the thiril race she was run 1 up 5400 over her entorod price of 00 by "Texas" J. H. Smith. The fillys owner, however, retained her. Starter Dwyer in a measure presented Fla-mora with the fifth race. He let this filly oil F flying about a length in front and nothing ever r got near her. Bhe was 31 to 1 and well backed. . The favorite, Sam Fallen, was never dangerous s and finished fourth.
