GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Wednesdays Cincinnati Commercial Tribune says: "Captain J. H Rees, tbe racing judge, was at Newport yesterday. He is here to confer with Secretary Ed Hopper, of the Latonia Jockey Club, and Manager Frank Fowler, of the Newport track, they being a Turf Congress Committee appointed to establish an office for the Congre ss in Covington. The gentlemen will meet today and decide on the location of the office. Captain Bees will preside in the stand at New Orleans this winter. When asked if he would be one of the Jockey Club stewards next season he said: I have been asked indirectly to be one of the Jockey Club stewards but have not been approached by any of the eastern officials directly. I have not given any thought to the matter and can hardly say at present that 1 will go east next year in any official capacity. " To its already existing splendid list of skilfully devised stakes the always enterprising Coney Island Jockey Club has added another that should meet hearty approval and generous response from the owners of the country. It is a great stake for two-year-old fillies with conditions so devised that it is estimated its annual value will ba at least 0,000. It iB for foals of 1899, and it will be first contested in 1901 at the autumn meeting of the club, and suonld have an appreciable influence in heightening the value of fillies at the annual sales of yearlings. Entries closa November 15 and the conditions are detailed in the advertising department of this issue of Daily Racing Form. So much has been said and written about the inadequate provision made by the jockey clubs for fillies that it will be of interest to observe how fully owners will met this mere than liberal proffer by entries sufficient to attest their conviction that it provides for a long-felt want. Entries to the long-established and popular Foam and Surf Stakes, for two-year-olds, and Tidal Stakes, for three-year-olds, close on tbe same date. They are so well known to the turfmen of the country at large that it is only necessary to say that Secretary Fellows is re idy to receive all entrieB mailed up to midnight of November 15, I The program for the opening day of the Bir-I mingham, Ala., meeting Novembir 7 is as follows: Puree 00. of which 5 to second, 5 to third; for all ages; seven pounds below scale; winners of tbe race of 00 value or three races of any v-tlue to carry five pounds extra; five and one half f arlongs.
