NOTES OF TELE TURF. W. J. Speirs will try his fortune on the coast again the coming winter. Tuesday he shipped Faunette and the others of his string to Frisco. He took with him two two-year-olds belonging to J. V. Carter. One is a full brother to Dr. Sharp and the other a sister to the good race mare, Weolia. J. Carter, the diminutive jockey and a promising lightweight, accompanied Mr. Speirs. Mr. Garter has turned out for the winter his good three-year-old, GneBB Me, and the others of his string, with the exception of two which be has at Newport, and he. too, will go to the coast after the present meeting at the Campbell county track. Cincinnati Enquirer. At the conclusion of the racing at Oakland, Friday, the judges and stewards suspended jockey J. Ward and the horses composing Barney Schreibers stable, pending the investigation of the inconsistent running of Forte and Aluminum. No suspicion attaches to Mr. Scbreibsr in the premises, as he is in New York for one thing, and his long and honorable career as a turfman has put him above suspicion for another. As to Forte it might be said that he never was a consistent horse in any owners hands. Aluminums bad race was in the mud and his win was over a fast, dry track. The California State Board of Agriculture haB decided to provide as a substitute for the present Futurity stakes, annually run at Sacrament, a great stallion nomination stake, stallions to be nominated before January 1, 1900, the produce of mares bred in 1899, colts to ba named January 1, 1901, and to be run at the Btate Fair in 1902. This is expected to be the richest stake ever run in California, and the stakes and added money are expected t o amount to a great many thousands of dollars. The Grand Prix do Paris for 1901 has obtained 519 entrieB, es compared with 491 for 19C0, and 459 for this years race. The Grand Prix deserves its remarkable success, for it is both the richest and the cheapest stake in Europe, j There is 0,000 of added money, and an owner can "get oat" for 0, by declaring forfeit about five weeks before tbe race is run. The added money, moreover, is given without aoy deductions, the sweepstakes going to the winner. I
