GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Jerid, who astonished race goers by winning at 50 to 1 at the Oakland track was formerly a ttomnambulist, and thereby hangs a tale. P. Byan brought the youngster out from the east, together with Marcato, Silver Tone and Afa-mada. Jerid used to eat three meals regularly, but he kept growing thin and thinner despite the glorious climate of California. Byan, who is one of the shrewdest trainers that ever shipped a horse to this country, became alarmed, as it looked as if Jerid. who showed great promise, would Boon develop into a living skeleton. About this time Byan discovered that Jerid was a somnambulist, or, as race track men say, a "stall walker." Just before the Los Angeles meeting "Cnrloy" Shields purchased Jerid, and the colt created a decided sensation by capturing a race at the longest odds of the present season. But Jeridisnolongerasomnambuiist. Shields -was at bis wits end to discover a remedy, but all bis efforts proved futile until he put another horse and a dog in the stall with Jerid. The son of Sabine at once made friends with his new companions, and became so contented that be has taken on more than a hundred pounds. San Francisco Chronicle. A special from Birmingham, Ala., to the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune of last Wednesday said: " This afternoon Judge Green, of the Criminal Court, granted a petition for mandamus to compel Justice I. H. Banners to issue a warrant for the arrest of Thoe. G.Hewlett on the charge of violating the antipool-Eelling law of the State. "He was a bookmaker at the State Fair, and was heretofore arreeted on this charge, but released under a ruling of Jndge Feagan, of the Inferior Criminal Court, who declared the law unconstitutional. Judge Green, who sits in a higher court, takes a contrary view, his issuance of mandamus being equivalent to declaring the law constitutional. Judge Greens ruling will, it is thought, eventually prevail, and it is stated that tbo horsemen will accept it in good time and Btop the races now in progress at tbo Fair Grounds, However, the law will be finally teeted in the Supreme Court."
