SAN FB AN CISCO TURF TALK. At the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club meeting in New Zealand the colored jockey Jerry Chorn, who was ruled off here in California some years ago, and went to Australia with an Afro-American minstrel combination, was allow od to ride the chestnut gelding Autai, by Dread-naught, and won. Jerry had not forgotten how to ride and the New Zealand Beferee says he got his horse away in the lead and ridicg a la Sloan, "never allowed the opposition the slightest chance of getting on terms." The Breeder and Sportsman. Imported Idalium recently died at the Napa stock farm of A. B. Spreckels. He was principally famcus on account of being a full brothor to Sir Modred and Cheviot, two stallions that have given California many a stake-winner. Among the race horses sired by brothers to the dead Australian horse were Dr. Hasbrouck, Tournament, Bey el Santa Anita, Bendoran and Briar Sweet. July is another brother of the dead Idalium. The Chronicle. E dward Hopper arrived in San Francisco last Sunday, and on Monday took his place in the judges stand at Oakland. Mr. F. E. Mulhcl-land retired from the pagoda and resumed the position of patrol judge, Horace Egbort going back to the press stand. There will be three straight weeks racing at Tanforan in January, while Oakland will have as many weeks in February. This arrangement was made necessary in order to divide the holidays. Buinart, who gained a "sensational victory in the Burns handicap of 1897, is once again at the Oakland track. His owner is very confident that he will stand up, but it is a question as to whether he will ever regain hiB form of 1897. Clarence Waterhouse says that Duckoy was more highly tried than Yellow Tail last spring. Ed Corrigan has again put Riley in training after being in the stud for several years. Louis Ezell, the well-known owner, is back from Chicago.
