Winner-B. g, by The Bard— Equipoise. Went to post at 2:15. Off at the first break to a good start. Won driving and staggering. The next five were also under keen pressure. Scales was the best, and although handicapped by the deep going showed considerable quality and ran gamely. The entire field at the finish was staggering. Scales leaned up against and interfered slightlywith Praetorian in the last twenty yards and Boland lodged a claim of foul against Ross. The judges gave both boys a hearing and then wisely let the race stand as the horses finished. Praetorian made a good showing and will not remain in the maiden class long. Charley Moore finished with a sensational rush, Tayon and Mandamus both quit badly in the stretch. Mellocole got a running start and showed some speed. Scratched 18441 Daisy O., 107; 18292 Auster, 109; 18441 Rose Trelawuy, 107. Corrected weights -ODea, 109. Scales, place, 1 to 2. Praetorian, place, 2 to 1 ; show, evens. Won easily; second the same. Silverdale was the best, l est ridden and in a soft spot. He is a youngster of good class and has a liking for heavy going. Saunazaro is a fairly good youngster and had all kinds of bad luck in this race, but stood it fairly and can be marked for early action. Icon was short of early speed and can do better. The 6ame comment applies to Battus. Both Denizulu and Tenny Belle stopped in the stretch, as did Lillie Pantland, who was in the deep going most of the way. Scratched— 17946*Miss Daniels, 100. Off at the first break to a good start. Won in a long drive of two. Governor Budd was well ridden and lucky. He fenced well and liked the deep going. McHugh resorted to bad tactics at the head of the stretch. When he and Becky Rolfe headed for the main track McHugh bumped and carried the latter as wide as possible. Johnson made a claim of foul, but it was not allowed. The decision was a proper one, too. as the turn from the steeplechase to the track proper is a very sharp one, and it is more than likely that the questionable piece of riding was accidental on McHugh s part. Becky Rolfe is a game mare and made a game showing. Zufallig was in front when he fell. The accident happened at tie water jump, directly in front of the stand, and for an instant it seemed that the jockey was killed, but both horse and rider escaped uninjured. Phil Becker seemed to be going well in hand when he fell. Nothing serious resulted from thi6 accident. Scratched— 18235 Chenier, 141. Governor Budd, place, 3 to a ; show, out. Winner— Ch. h, by Sir Dixon— Prairie Queen. Went to post at 3:45. At post 10 minutes. Start fair. Wou easily; second and third were driving to the limit. Orimar liked the going, was well handled and on the far turn went to the front on call. He is a good, useful horse that lias bad legs and consequently performs best on a soft track. Teucer, under clever handling, luckily got second place. He was tired enough to lie down at the sixteenth post and from there home Boland fairly lifted him in. Cogmoosey acted insanely at the post and was tlie cause of the delay. He showed speed but from all indications was short and quit badly in the stretch. Ross quit riding at the end and was fined 5 for doing so. Scratched— 18293 Sea Knight, 107; 18411 Sidbow, 100. Orimar, place, 3 to 5; show, out. Teucer, place, 6 to 5; show, 1 to 2. Winner— Br. h, by Hayden Edwards— Bettie Blaise. Went to post at 4 :20. Off at the first break to a good start. Won eased up. The next two were driving. Bannockburn was outrun in the first part of the race but that did not seem to bother Ruiz who sat quietly and as cool as a cucumber, not making a move until the stretch was reached when Bannockburn shot to the front like a flash and won like a stake horse should when beating selling platers. Brulare was right there all the way and ran a good race. Orion broke flying and showed quite a turn of speed. Josephine B. ran a fair race. San Mateo quit in the stretch. Pauline J. was interfered with at the start. Old Mike can do better. Winner— Ch. h, by Tristan— Fair Helen. Went to post at 4 :55. Off at the first break to a good start. Won in a long, hard drive. The next three were doing their best. Trimmer was far the best and had to be to win. Miller was slow in getting the horse in motion and encountered all kinds of bad racing luck, but Trimmer was game and standing a terrific drive through the last half mile got up barely in time to win. Blue Lick hung a trifle in the last twenty yards. Oxnard ran a good race and was interfered with in the stretch. Castake appeared dangerous a quarter of a mile out, but could not stand the pressure at the end. Guess Me could not run fast enough to keep warm. Pay the Fiddler stopped in a stride on the far turn and Kuhn eased him at the end. Trimmer was run up C0 over his entered price of 00 by H. E. Rowell and bought by him.
