MAY BEACHS FAST RACK. Tlie excellent sport at Washington Park yesterday was marred to some extent by an accident in the fourth race. There were only four starters in the race and it was hardly to be expected that an accident should happen in such a small field, but accidents will happen where least expected. The unlucky horse to fall was Etta and down with her went the popular jockey Bullman. rider of the winner of the Derby. The accident happened on the first turn and was a peculiar one. Bullman, with Etta, was on the inside and apparently had plenty of room to get through but the filly was rank and in one of her wild lunges to get to the front she jumped on All Gold and this caused her to fall. Etta turned a complete somersault and for an instant it was feared that Bullman was badly hurt, but luck was with the jockey and before the races were over he was able to walk around, "a trifle disfigured," but with no broken bones. It is a wonder that All Gold was not cut or ruined by Etta. The filly struck him just below the hock and peeled a lot of skin from his leg, causing an ugly looking wound, but nothing serious will result from it. Had Etta struck All Gold about three inches higher, or above the hock, she would have severed the coIib ham string and ruined him for life. All Gold, notwithstanding that he was giving weight to all the other starters, won the race by a head from Praetorian after a hard drive. Golden Age. Silverdale and Jiminez furnished a rattling good contest in the first race, thereby keying the crowd up to concert pitch from the send-off. Bullman was on Golden Age, Burns on Silverdale and L. Rose on Jiminez, and from the eighth post home the trio had it hammer and tongs. Rose was outfinished by the other two jockeys, but it is hard to say that Burns was outfinished by Bullman, but such was the case, and Golden Age got the money by the narrow margin of a nose. Burns was sharply criticised on all sides after the race, it being the general opinion that he tried to beat Bullman out by a nose and threw the race away. That May Beach is in good form and also that Cay wood is a jockey of no mean ability, was demonstrated in the fifth race. The Texas bred daughter of Bobby Beach— Faithless was in with a lot of crackerjacks, but the talent made her favorite, and under a handsome ride she came home a full length in front of Fly By Night, who beat Modrine eight lengths for second place. Buchanan rode, or at least made a bluff, at riding Fly By Night, and the chances are. judging from the way the race was run, that with a good, strong, energetic rider up, Fly By Night would have won for his popular owner, Barney Schreiber, who backed him heavily. The horse was close enough to May Beach at the head of the stretch to run over her in the final furlong, but Buchanan seemed to be in a trance ami let May Beach and Cay wood steal away from him. Master Buchanan also rode a slovenly race on Vohicer. who Scales beat a neck for the second event. The boy kept his horse pocketed all down the backstretch and waited until too late before he pulled out and went arouud. When he had clear sailing and a winning chance in the stretch he did everything but fall off, and succeeded in being beaten. Buchanan rode a few good races at Harlem and has a bit of talent as a jockey and it is to be hoped that he does , not put up any more such rides as he did on Fly By Night aud Vohicer. Cambrian, with US pound.- up, ran a cracking good race at a mile and an eighth, beating ; . Bangle, Zoroaster, W. Overton and Silver Garter handily. Caywood rode Cambrian and the I Laudeman boss" stepped the nine furlongs in 1:554. Topmast was a good horse, and had to be to win his race. Vititoe, who seems to be a coward, took him the longest route but managed to get up just in time to beat Patroon by a nose. Boland, on Patroon, went to sleep in the stretch, otherwise he could not have lost. Jockey H. Stuart, who fell and broke his collar bone at Hawthorne, was up and around the track yesterday and in a few days will be seen in the saddle again. Stuart rides a good race and should have no trouble in getting plenty of mounts. He won the first stake race of the local season on Benson Caldwell at Lakeside.
