] IMPROVKMENTS AT HARLKM. Additional surprises are in store for race- . goers when Harlem reopens its gates for the : ,-ummer meeting Monday, August 6. The already splendidly equipped racing plant has j been further improved in numerous respects : i since the close of the spring meeting June 22. | As soon as the crowd left after the last race I Superintendent Myers began putting into effect plans for further beautifying the property. Al- ] though his nieu have only baen at work for a week evidences of energy are apparent in every spot of the Proviso s peedway. | One of the pleasing additions is to the south of the grandstand in the shape of a spacious ! lawn. 450 feet long by 150 feet wide. In the cen ter of this sward an artificial lake. 200x80. is being excavated. Th is lagoon will be bordered by vitrified white tiling, and in the center of it a mammoth fountain will send refreshing sprays of water skyward. At each of the four corners of the miniature lake the waters of. smaller fountains will be thrown toward the central stream. To the south end of this lawn an immensely high flagpole, from which the national colors will tloat. will be erected in a few days. And in the center of the infield another flagpole. 100 feet high, will be placed. At the wings of each steeplechase obstacle the lags of all nations will wave. Only, however, on such days when jumping races are not on the program. When races "over the timber" are carded the obstacles will be ornamented with the conventional ; red and white flags. All parts of the new grandstand and betting ring are now complete. Every portion of the last named structure fully comports with its surroundings, insomuch, that it lias been walled and ceiled with hardwood. Where a roadway formerly led from the Twelfth street entrance to the paddock is uow a wide lawn, dotted with llower bed-. The track proper is in even better shape than the last day of the spring meeting, when Sly gave to the world the new record of 1:19 for six and a half furlongs. Inder the direction of superintendent Myers a force of men is kept at work upon its surface each day. with the result that the cushion is in perfect condition. The -take liet provides four for two-year-olds, three tor three-year-olds, three for three-year-olds and upward, two for all age- and one for steeplechases and the Turf Congress Handicap, which closed with ninety nominations. Entry blanks will be ready for distribution tomorrow. Nominations to the Harlem stakes will be closed Monday, July 23.
