SILYEKIIAI.ES KD.KWATEK. That portion of Chicagos population which is interested in racing quite evidently realizes that the magnificent meeting now in progress at Washington Park is rapidly approaching the closing glories of Wheeler Handicap day. The card yesterday was not one of marked strength. yet fully 10.0C0 -pectators were present to attest the great popularity of Washington Park racing, and the general determination to witness as much of it as possible in the space of time yet remaining. Nominally the Edgewater Stakes was the main feature of the afternoons sport, but the overshadowing form of Schorrs pair, Alard Scheck and Silverdale. sufficed to bring about the scratching of Admonition. Forkford and Sculptress and Schorr withdrew his filly Lady Schorr. So the field was red viced to five starters, with the Schorr pair overwhelming favorites on the estimated certainty that either could win. The outcome emphatically demonstrated the correctness of public opinion. The stable declared to win with Silverdale. so Knight shot him to the front and took up the running at once and was th* leader to the end Alard Scheck. under restraint, acted the part of convoy throughout, ready to come to the rescue if danger should threaten. But none of the other starters was sufficiently speedy to disturb Silverdale. so Alard Scheck. hard held, took in the 00 allotted the second horse and hisstable companion won on sufferance. Green Morris Vitellius ran his best race and thereby landed the meager honors and pelf attaching to third place. It was the Becond running of the Edge-water and the second time it has fallen to the Schorr stable. W. Overton having won it in 1898. Its net value to the winner yesterday was ,890. The second race was the medium of introducing a sprinter of great merit t the patrons of Washington Park, one that so far this year has a record of uniform success. This was the horse George Arnold, freshly brought up from St. Louis, where he had repeatedly demonstrated his speed this summer. Pat Duunesfast colt Reminder dashed into the lead directly after the barrier ascended and -et a hot pace around to the stretch witli George Arnold, running within handy striking distance. In the stretch Vandusen brought George Arnold np and at the finish won by a narrow margin, yet with the evident ability to have made it a wide one had it been deemed desirable. Some interest will attach to George Arnold- clashing with Ma Beach. Sly. Georgie and the other belt sprinters now abiding in Chicago. Gold Fox won t lie mile and an eighth handicap without turning a hair. Ip to this race the handicaps at the track have resulted in contests of rare excellence and interest, but in this Bold Fox had nothing to beat except two mediocre three- ear-olds and sour-tempered old Donna Rita. Dissolute displayed a fine turn of -peed, but it was of no avail, for when Bullmau released Gold Fox from his restraining hold the good colt strode by Dissolute and won looking around at the ladies in the grand stand. Crosbv . with Bullman up. proved equal to annexing the opening m ile dash in handy fashion and fast time, and Mellocole showed his versatility, when, as the absolute outsider in the quotations, he managed to scramble home in front of Toribio in the fourth race of the da;, by a very narrow margin. Vohicer ran in humble obscurity in this race end wa- promptly claimed b J. H. Smith. The favorite. Limerick, somewhat unlucky heretoforejwas an easy winner iu the concluding race ofthe day and as lie was "boosted" to the extent of 00 afterward his success wae barren of profit to his owner unles- via the bookies bank rolls. A special sweepstakes of great interest has been arranged for next week. Garry Hermann. Miss Bennett and Golden Age are to meet at si* furlongs for £";C0 each, and the club is to add si. 000.
