HAWTHORNK RACING. Seven races again was the order at Hawthorne yesterday, and four of these fumislied hair raising finishes. The afternoon was cool and bright, the track was fast, and everything pointed to first class racing. Starter Holtman had big fields to contend with, but he got them away well and promptly as a rule. Fancy Woods win of the third event was one of the bright features and had the filly not been as game as a pebble, she could not have scored. Wink field was up and the speculators backed Fancy Wood heavily at about 7 to 5, but on the far turn the filly and Winkfield got into a jam and at the three-eighths post the pair looked like a 100 to 1 shot. Once straightened away in the stretch, however, Fancy Wood began to gain gradually on the leader. Barbara M., and in the very last stride managed to poke her nose in front. It was a thrilling finish and brought forth much applause from the crowded grandstand. Limelight, Lomond and Guess Me came tear ing through the stretch on equal terms in the fourth race and finished so close together that only the judges could separate them. The race was at seven furlongs, with an even dozen starters, and Mr. Holtman had trouble of his own in getting them away, and when he did give the word the field was badly strung out. with Balk Line left standing still at the post. Guess Me went to the front on the first turn and was the pacemaker throughout. She was joined by Limelight and Lomond at the head of the stretch, and from there to the wire the trio had it hammer and tougs. In Alcedo Pat Dunne seems to have a three-year-old that will win many purses before the season closes. Thie handsome bay colt picked up 115 pounds in the fifth event and beat The Unknown and Florizar without an effort, running the mile and a sixteenth in 1 :46i. The first mile of this race was run in 1:40 flat and the first three-quarters in 1:18., with The Unknown in front. Florizar was always outrun and appeared to Bulk in the stretch. Marsara was heavily backed by a select few at 10 to 1 to beat Onomastus and Algareta in the second race which was at three-quarters of a mile and. well ridden by Mathews, she "delivered the goods" finely. To win, however, Marsara did not have to beat either Onomastus or Algareta but Goebel, and the latter gave her a hard tussle being only beaten by a neck in the last few strides. Onomastus swerved badly in the stretch and was lucky to be third. Algareta raced as if stale and badly in need of a rest and finished a distant fifth. It seems a shame thac such ■ good, game, consistent filly as Algareta when in form should be so badly handled as she has been handled this season. Bugaboo at 44 to 1 beat Woodstick and Fondo by a narrow margin in the first race. Cogmoosey and Dutch Comedian, both noted bad actors, were fortunate in getting away in the sixth and seventh races respectively, and both won as they pleased. Cogmoosey was a 2* to 1 favorite, but Dutch omedian was a heavily-backed "good thing, being backed from 8 to 1 down to 4i to 1. Jockey Knight was fined 5 for loose riding on Grandon and Onomastus. W. P. Magrane ran Limelight up from 00 to .S" 00 and got him.
