NOTES OF THE TURF. Although the Carbine colts, Creuzot and Quick Shot, have both won in England this season, they would appear to be only moderate animals. Subsequent to their successful performances they both ran in the Craven Stakes one mile and twenty-two yards, at the Newmarket Craven meeting. This was a race confined to three year olds and there were seven runners. Creuzot was backed at 5 to 1, but finished last, just behind Quick Shot, the winner turning up in Headpiece. Carbine will need something better than these two to bring him into repute with English breeders. : That Ben Rigby has been cautioned for rough riding by the stewards of the English Jockey Club, and that his tactics caused a smash-up in which Tod Sloan was seriously hurt, is no surprise to the race goers here, who know him best. Like all boys who served their appren- ticeship at East St. Louis, Madison and South Side, he is willing to take any kind of a chance, and has little regard for the safety of others when smashing his way through a crowded field. It is regrettable that so capable a boy as Sloan should have been the victim of his tactics.— St. Louis Sporting News. The Trenton— Sandiway filly in the sale of the Duke of Westminster yearlings, which brought 550 guineas, is said to be the result of artificial impregnation.
