THE SUBURBAN Sacing at Graveeend will terminate next Friday and Saturday will be marked by the opening of the Coney Island Jockey Clubs sum ¬ mer meeting at Sheepshead Bay The feature of the opening day will be the decision of the most famous of American handicaps the Su ¬ burban The present prospect is for a good field of starters with Mr Belmonts splendid horse Ethelbert sure to be the post favorite Concerning the race the Sun of Monday says saysThere There will be a good field but a number of popular horses will be absent because of un ¬ avoidable injuries At present it is thought that the starters will include Ethelbert Conroy Batten Standing Prince of Melbourne Alcedo Sidney Lucas Gulden Charentne Bean Gallant Brigadier King Bramble Decantnr Bonnibert Water Cure Kamara Bellario Blues All Gold and Alsike AlsikeSince Since Conroys remarkable victory in the Brooklyn Handicap the crack threeyearold has been a trifle lame because of stepping on a stone while galloping a couple of weeks ago Trainer James Howe was disturbed at the time but Mr Keenes colt has been getting well rapidly and last Saturday he was pronounced perfectly sound In the Subur ¬ ban Conroys impost will include a tenpound penalty for winning the Brooklyn bnt this will enable Spencer the regular jockey of the stable to have the mount which will in itself be a big item in the calculations Last Thursday Eth ¬ elbert worked a mile and a qnarter in the sen ¬ sationally fast time of 2061 Up to that time his start in the Suburban was in donbt but now it has all been cleared up The noted son of Eothen Maori will do some racing at Grave tend this afternoon just to smooth off whatever rough edges there may be remaining in his physical composite Turfmen are agreed that Perry Belmonts horse will be a big favorite in Saturdays big race and that he will carry an ocean of money to the post Capt S 8 Brown is confident that in Batten he has the winner The horse has been preparing slowly daring the spring and has not been seen in public publicIt It is highly probable that Dick Roches splendid colt Standing will be a popular choice In the Brooklyn Handicap on a muddy track Standing ran third when it was generally con ¬ ceded before the race that the going was not to his liking If the track next Saturday is dry and fast Standing it is believed will be a con ¬ tender all the way providing of course that he is properly ridden and meets with no acci ¬ dents dentsSidney Sidney Lucas has been racing steadily all the season without much rest Of late it would appear that he has been going back in form rather than improving so that though ho is in well with 110 pounds it is bard to figure him a dangerous factor Mr Mackaye Gulden has made only one appearance this year That was in the Brookdale Handicap in which the colt carried 114 pounds six more than he will shoulder in the Suburban yet his showing was a disappointment For threequarters of a mile he did fairly well but after that he went to pieces and was passed by Carbuncle Eamara Sidney Lncas Decanter and Zeus August Bel ¬ monts Brigadier in the same race was just as poor and the experts figure that he has not the time to improve enough to have a look in on next Saturday Old Decanter has been showing well enough to be regarded as an outside chance In his workouts Decanter is said to have done fast time timeRichard Richard Crokers Beau Gallant so far has been the biggest kind of a disappointment Last Monday he conceded weight to Dr Bar ¬ low First Whip and Alcedo and was nowhere Again on Friday the colt was easily distanced by The Rhymer Terminus and Herbert Still there is room for improvement in the SuLnrban even though he will be conceding weight to all except Ethelbert and Prince of Melbourne The latter has been slowly tuned up at Brigh ¬ ton Beach and has displayed such rapid im ¬ provement in form that he will almost surely start Kamara with only 100 pounds is thought to have a fine chance The mare has been 1 rounding into her old shape though in both of her races she has finished second to Carbuncle Kamara is good in any kind of going and game 1 to the core Alcedo has done jnst enough public racing to attract the attention of those who who watch the improvement of thoroughbreds closely Blues was in better trim when he raced after Commando in the Carlton Stakes than at any previous time this year King 1 Bramble Alsike and All Gold have been racing steadily and do not cut much ice in the general 1 figuring
