ED AUSTIN BLK C 2 BY VTAGNEB MAY KENNEDY ED AUSTIN Good as Abe Frank has proved himself to ba there are in Chicago seme good jndgf s of the merits cf horses who entertain the opinion that his stable companion Ed Austin is probably better This does not appear in the records bnt the manner in which he has been made to play second fiddle to his more famous com ¬ rade with the resultant avoidance of penalties for big etakes to come serves to lend color to the theory However this may be the colt has done enough on his own account to secure the respectful consideration of owners of other good two yearolds and on the whole Mr Ben ¬ nett is a lucky owner in possessing two such racing jewels in one season seasonEd Ed Austin is a half brother of that rare old sprinter OCcunell and evidently a chip from the ssme block in point of speed His first start WEB at Worth May 3 in a four and a half furlongs dash for maiden twoyearolds for which nine went to the post From the begin ¬ ning of the year he hcd been reported to bo a good one and wont to the post a 7 to 5 favorite and won easily by three parts of a length from diracleilJjLBriEeacflni hing a distant third The other starters were Hat Mitchell Mihasa Illowaho Puryear Fishers Hornpipe and Braggtba latter being left at the post Ed Austintwas under etrocg restraint at the finish and made an excellent impression on those who witnessed his debut The race was run in 56 seconds secondsAt At thefsame track May 6 he captured another pune atlfive furlongs this time Having only John ACJarke Bert Sargent Miracle II and Harry Brennan to dispose of he went to the post an odds on favorite at 3 to 5 and won but not without a sharp struggle Ho did not get off well and it was some time before he was well settledjinjhis stride but coming fast through the stretch befgot up in time to win by a head with something left John A Clarke being second a BOEO in front of Bert Sargent The time waEjl029 and it is not probable that the two sharp contenders in this race will ever again be able to be so near Ed Austin at the finish of a race May 8 ho won another puree at Worth albalfmilo dash which ho won in 481 with Johanna D second and Bridge third Miracle II John A Clarke Brissac and Gracchi running unplaced Ed Austin won easily by two and a half lengths conceding Johanna D fourteen pounds besides her sex allowance He concluded hievictorioua campaign at Worth May 25 by taking another halfmile dash from Hat Mitchell Brannigan Johanna D The Stewardess and Parnassus in 50J seconds win ¬ ning eaeecupiwithHat Mitchell second lapped out by Brannigan He was as usual an odds on favorite and left Vorth with a record oi four straightswinning races racesHis His next start was for the Vernal Stakes at Hawthorne May 27 The starters and weights were Abe Frank 124 pounds Ed Austin 118 Eddie Busch121 J V Kirby 115 South Elk horn 118 and Brannigan 118 Abe Frank won easily bytwo lengths while Ed Austin saved second money by a neck after a sharp struggle with Eddie Bnsch and J V Kirby it being a case of necks apar between the three The five furlongs were covered in 1 01i June 5 he won a purse at Hawthorne over a five furlong route defeating HarryjBeck South Trimble Miracle II De claimerMcChesriey Altona Prince Light Lady Avon andlBaldonkeel in 1 01 He led through oat and won easily by a length giving weight to all the otherlstartere He was a length in front of HarrylBeck at the finish the latter beating Booth Trimble a head This was his last win nlrigfperformance At Harlem June 15 he sustained a defeat from the fast filly Elsie L It was in a half mile dash and in an exciting finish Elsio L was first by a neck with Ed Austin second R neck before Sweat Billie Ho carried 120 pounds to 112 each on the other two The time was 4SJ and tho seven other starters were hull down in the distance the nearest Horodes being sevoa lengths away from Swoet Billie He started for tho Graduate Stakes at the same track June 18 and ran ssc ond to his mate Abe Frank Only four started Abo Frank 123 Ed Austin 118 Arian 106i and Charles W Meyer 123 Abe Frank won by a half length in l09Gwith Arian third two lengths away awayAt At Washington Park his only start so far has been in the Quickstep Stakes won by Abe Frank Tho latter won easily enough by a length and a half and Ed Austin appeared to have the second money comfortably disposed of when Charles W Meyer coming on suddenly with an unexpected flash of speed got up in time to barely head him out He left Jack Rattlin Memnon Sister Jeanie Wainamoinen and Autumn Leaves behind him however and ran an excellent race raceIt It will thus ba seen that ha has started in nine races of which he has been first in five second iu three and third in one This is a rec ¬ ord that will bear considerable analysis and mayhap we may see whether he can do better than he has shown when the Hyde Park Stakes comes up for decision tomorrow
