ABE FRANKS EDGEWATER Tho handicap taken by Advance Guard yes ¬ terday suffered little in comparison with its illustrious predecessor the Young Handicap Tho finish was moving and spirited hardly five lengths intervening between the winner and tho last horsa Tho son of Great Tom was given a much moro energetic ride than he received in the classic of last Saturday as in tho latter event little Martin was of little or no holp to him when strong arm and leg work might have landed him tho winner He was clearly outrun in the earlier stages of the race yesterday but began to close ground when Hearing the final straightaway and fairly flew down tho last quarter quarterTo To a good start Robert Waddell darted into the lead closely attended by Louisville and Specific with Advance Guard last Curving around the club house turn and on to the half Louisville went into the lead with Specific die placing Robert Waddell from second position close up The Mahono mare held her advan ¬ tage all down the backstretch ard to just a lit ¬ tle bafore stretch turn with Specific always close up and Star Chamber taking third posi ¬ tion Onco otraightened for home there was a general closing up but suddenly the red and white bars of Advance Guards colors were soon moving up with the leaders Mathews was now riding him as hard as ha could and ho was closo up to Specific and Malay but in the last one hun ¬ dred yards that big strideof his gradually cut down those in front of him and finishing with a dash ho wont over the line a short half length in front of Malay who was tho sama distance bafore Specific Robert Waddell was a good fourth and showed that be has not gone back Louisville tired and quit badly whon tho cru ¬ cial test cama Caviar ran a dull raca but should do better at his next asking The con ¬ test was exciting throughout and was produc ¬ tive of keen enthusiasm in the closing strides Aba Frank proved beyond a doubt that his long runaway last week had not dulled his speed Many thinking it had were of the opinion that Pentecost would take his measure bat in this they wero disappointed for while ba put up a splendid effort ho was unable to baat the winner who has shown himself to be tho best colt in the west this year with the ex coption of AllanaDale Charles W Meyer dashed to the front at the flag dip and opened a gap of a length on the Bennett boanty with the others fairly well up Tho Schorr youngster still held his advantage to the run in but when once straightened away the eon of Hanover went up and grabbed him They ran lapped for a few strides when Charles W Meyer was seen to sprawl and the race as far as the winner was concerned was over Aba Frank finally won by a length from Pentecost who beat Sir Oliver a neck for second place Pentecost was not given tho very best ride possible and was slightly cut off in the last sixteenth Sir Oliver finished with firmness and showed himself a high class colt coltP P Dunnes Approved took the days opener in rather a handy fashion whilo Fred Woods con ¬ sistent Leo Newell won the second race in i fierce drive by a neck from Odnor Sly ran back to her California form and beat a fair field of sprinters in fast time tho six furlongs being run in 113 Scotch Plaid and San Andres had a terrific dual in tho last race through the final furlong Woods outriding Steelo at tho end and winning on the post by a nock The usual big attendance waa on hand and witnessed one of the best days sport of the season The card this afternoon promises well th oldp with tho splendid filly Endnranco by Right tho top weight
