were apprehensive the track was just a shade too hard for him George Arnold was an added starter but he might as vel have remained in the stable so far as cutting any figure in the race was con ¬ cerned cernedOff Off to an excellent start the big field swept down the stretch in a merry cluster The Lady having a slight lead over Robert tVaddoll with George Arnold The Conqueror II and Vesnvian bunched close up Rounding the club house turn The Lady increased her lead to a length and a half with the Derby winner of this year a length before Veeuvian Advance Guard and Pink Coat laid ninth and position the latter falling back to fourth and Vesnvian moving up into third place Both Pink Coat and Advance Guard had been busy in the mean ¬ time and wheeled into the final straightaway within four lengths of the leader Once straightened for home there was a general closing up and along near the eighth post Tbe Conqueror II got his neck in front and ap ¬ peared to have a chance to win The Lady and Bobert Waddell were faltering along in here and Vesuvian had already shot his bolt boltSuddenly Suddenly the colors of Pink Coat were seen bearing down on the Vincent colt and long be ¬ fore thelaet one hundred yards had been reach ¬ ed he bad nailed and passed him and the great Wheeler Handicap of 1901 was over for the son of Leouatus continued in the lead to the end winning hacdily by a Bright was never a factor at any part of the contest and ran far below expectations The handicap looked at from all sides was one of the grand ¬ est a ffaii B of its kind ever witnessed in the west westNine Nine sprinters of the first magnitude faced the barrier in the fifth race a dash over the Wcodlavtn course Sly was supposed to be the beat on her fast race of July 16 but she never showed prominently at any part of the Sight and finished almost a disgraceful last filontanic cleverly handled by Bnllman proved to be the best cc mitg along in the last sixteenth with a well timed rush and winning rather handily by abalf length from Vulcain who beat the im ¬ proving Livadia two lengths for second place Vnlcaiu put up a great performance and with any kitd of recta luck would have won He waealmcst last when turning into the stretch but closed with a rash on tLo inside rail and was carrying everything before him in the last sixteenth Sevoy as usual was speedy but proved a failure when the pinch came Sharp Bitd ranwell for five furlongs Much interest was taken out of the Lake View Handicap by the absence of Sir Oliver who had been shipped on east and Aba Frank who owner Bennett declared because ho thought the colt could not concede the weight The talent picked upon Memnon as a certainty and be was made an odds on favorite but the best he could do was to finish second the winner taming up in the despised outsider Rosewar RosewarTo To a fair start Memnon at once shot into the lead closely followed by South Elkhorn Rose war and Flora Pomona all lengths apart in the order named Nearing the half the Dunne gelding increased his advantage to two and a half lengths while Rosewar slipped up into sec ¬ ond position a neck in front of South Elkhorn who was a length and a half in the lead of the Schorr filly It appeared very much like Mem ¬ non as they straightened for home but along near a furlong out Roeewar began moving up on him and suddenly the sou of Tithonns was seen to falter In a bound Rosewar was at his side and then the race was over for the Burns Waterhouse filly came away quickly and won by three lengths Memnon was tiring badly in the closing strides and had all he could do to get second place by a head from the fast closing Flora Pomona South Elkhoru ran well for a half mile and then retired Tha six furlungs were run in 113 a very creditable perform ¬ ance anceBnrnie Bnrnie Bunton was in grand fettle yesterday and stepped off six furlongs in very fast style in the second race The Ryans backed Intro ductor for a good thing but after the colt had shown the way to the bodd of the stretch he tired and fall gradually away into sixth posi ¬ tion at the finish Harry Hereodeen with Bull man as pilot was fancied by many but he also failed to mate good quitting badly at the last eighth when he appeared all over a winner winnerBnrnie Bnrnie Bnuton laid along in fifth position to the last quarter where she saved ground by skinning the inside rail and comii g fast down the stretch ate up her field with ease winning by a length going away from Canmore who closed resolutely and nipped the tiring Henry Burt a neck on the post for second place
