ENGLISH AD HIRED LORIILARD The Special Commissioner of the London Sportsman writes under date of July 9 9Tha Tha death of Mr Lorillard will be very deeply regretted in this country and this can be written in no merely formal sense There are certain ethics of sport which lead us to applaud the victories of American or foreign rivals when they occur though they may be gall and wormwood to us aud in the same sense it is considered the right thing to always acknowl ¬ edge at once when beaten that it waa by a su ¬ perior opponent but these things only touch the surface Lower down there are often enough very different fancies But in regard to Mr Lorillard our congratulations on his victories hero were never superficial Ho was from the first recoguized as a sportsman and a gentleman who would grace nnd benefit any country aud I dont think anyone in Eng ¬ land ever grudged him a single victory of the many which he won Breeding his own horses and racing on a lavish scale ha showed little or nothing of the com ¬ mercial instinct in his operations and whoreas he commenced here with an American trainer in Jacob Pincus and later on had his horses with John Huggins we have to bear in mind as a token of his broad and liberal spirit that ha ended with the English trainer Georgo Black well who certainly gave hia employer every cause for satisfaction It had long been appar ¬ ent that Mr Lorillard WAS very i l and when 1 last saw him at Newmarket this year he was sadly changed He spoke with all his old in ¬ terest about his horses and declared that David Garrick was not only batter than Kilmarnuck II but was the best he bad ever sent to Eng ¬ land Iroqnois not excepted He added that it was in his mind to let David Garrick after rac ¬ ing fur another j ear stand for a season at the stud in England bo fore returning to America and was good anongh to say he would take my advice on the subjdct aa I had so often pointed out the desirability of our having a good Han ¬ over horse here to restore the Glencoe line
