HEKNANDOS GOOD BACK Hawthornes cracking good card yesterday drew out one of the largest crowds of the season at this course at least ten thousand persons being present The sport was by far the beat of the week and enthusiasm was at a premium all through the afternoon The weather was murky cool and threatening but no rain fell and the track was about at its best bestThe The feature event of the day was the Superior Stakes a handicap sweepstakes for threeyear olds and upward at one and onehalf miles The four horses that faced the barrier were Advance Gnard Pink Coat Hernando and Barrack The betting was very spirited Ad ¬ vance Guard being held the favorite Heruando to the surprise of many took the track at tha flag drop and running well within himself was never headed winning as he pleased Off to a good start he at once darted into the lead pass ¬ ing the stand for the first time two lengths in front of Advance Gnard who was a neck before Pink Coat with Barrack bringing up the rear two and a half lengths back of Pink Coat There was little change in these positions until well straightened into the backstretch where Pink Coat movea up to withia a length of the leader and Barrack closed on Advance Guard It seemed for a moment as if Pink Coat was going to cloee on Heruando but Ranch held his monnt well together and easily continued in the lead Turning into the stretch he increased his advantage to two lengths while Advance Guard and Barrack both closed on Pink Coat It was a stirring contest between thoee three all the way down the stretch Nothing could overcome the ad ¬ vantage of the leader and he galloped home three lengths in the lead at the last eighth The others were necks apart and being driven to the limit Pink Coat fal ¬ tered for a moment but came again Barrack wao probably the strongest in the closing stride but Nntt was of little help to him and besides he was in the middle closely pressed by the other two The three swept over the line almost on equal terms but Advance Guard in the last stride not hienoso in front of Barrack which in turn beat Pink Coat the shortest of heads for third money It was a spectacular finish outside of the winner and aroused the big crowd present to the keenest pitch of enthusiasm enthusiasmThe The fifth race a free handicap at six furlongs was won by that good sprinter George Arnold which is in rare fettle jast now and almost in ¬ vincible at any distance under seven furlongs There were some very fast sprinters entered in this race but they all acknowledged their in ¬ feriority as the big son of Sir Dixou romped over them down the last quarter quarterThe The lightweighted Bnrnie Bnnton went into the lead at the barriers rise and closely at ¬ tended by Mies Bennett set a scorching pace passing the quarter a half length apart with Livadia third three lengths away George Arnold here was seventh but moving along in big graceful strides and within hailing dis ¬ tance Bending for humo Barnia Bunton still clung to Miss Bennetts side while Headwater had displaced Livadia in third position Wink field called on George Arnold here and he moved up fast getting within about three lengths of the leaders by the time the last eighth post had been reached At this critical juncture Burnie Bnnton gave up the struggle and Miss Bennett began to hang Quicker than it can be told George Arnold was at her throat latch and with a bound he passed her with consummate ease winning in a canter by a length in the fast time of 1134 a commendable performance con siderinR the unfavorable condition of the weather for fast racing Miss Bennatt beat Bnrnie Bunton a length for second place while the latter was about asf ar in front of Head ¬ water waterIn In the youngster scramble at five furlongs Magi repeated her victory of the day before margins from Jack Rattlin and Bister Jeanie JeanieMax Max Bendix won the first race in easy fashion and The Pride easily disposed of a fairly good field in the third Hermencia at extravagant odds led Alaska home in the fifth and G W W long overdue captured the concluding race of the day and the curtain dropped on Haw ¬ thorne racing to remain down for the apace of two weeks
