SURPRISES AT HARLEM for an off day racing at Harlem yesterday 7 s about as good as could be Riven anywhere The track was in splendid condition and al ¬ though the weather was threatening all after ¬ noon no rain fell The usual large crowd was present and greatly enjoyed the days sport With no Filon dOr to smother his field entered in the eteoplacbaae the crosa oonntry affair teemed to ba an open affair Donation after the betting had settled being made the favorite The steeplechase like others of late had its nsnal qnota of mishapE three of six that started falling at different points of the journey Crest led at the start by a big margin f ancing clea nly and holding hie advantage up to the ninth jnmp where Donation moved up and passed him handily the result never being in doubt thereafter He won in a canter by two lengths while the Ezell jumper beat Dick Pnrber seven for second place Dnrwad went down heavily at the eighth jnmp He was pretty well spent at the time Bermuda Hun ¬ dred fell at the third jump describing a com ¬ plete eomersault He was fresh and going easily at the time Bone Setters race was a farce He simply dragged himself over each obstacle obstacleTriaditza Triaditza which has been long overdue for a bracket finally fell into a spot where she could win It was in the second race a dash of six fnrlonge King Dollio was made the favorite but ran a poor race although he had not much of a cbanceafter the flag fell Delia Ostrand b acked for a good thing by Tom Barrett and his friende dashed to the front at the barriers rise followed by Lyror Hell and C B Camp ¬ bell with Triaditza lying along in fifth position Delia Ostrand held her advantage clear up to the last eighth post where she tired and quit In the meantime Tria ¬ ditza had been closing gradually on those in front of her and coming strongly on the out ¬ side in the last eighth passed easily into the lead in the last fifty yards She won going away by two lengths from Emma B who fin ¬ ished fast beatit g The Phoenician a length for secord place The latt namid put up a good race Iteming from nowhere in the last eighth and finishing with a whirl He is rounding into his California foim and should win soon Siren Bong last at the first quarter was knock ¬ ing at the door after making up much ground King Dellis last away met with early interfer ¬ ence and bad no chance thereafter thereafterThe The fifth event a scramble for youngsters at five furlongs proved to be the best contested race of the day the winner turning up in Lord I Quex who was entirely overlooked in thoibetfing as good as 8 to 1 being chalked against his chances Sister Jeanie rushed to the front at flag dip and set a scorching pace to the head of the stretch with Ishtar second and Bosewar third Coming down the final quarter Sister Jeanie began to tire allowing Ishtar to pass into the lead It appeared all over like Ishtar when a lixteenth out but Lord Quex arae with a rmsh from away back and passed her handily winning by a length South Trim ¬ ble finished with determination in the last six ¬ teenth finishing third a length back of Ishtar Lord Quex was much the best and put up a highclass effort turning into the final quarter in almost last position Boaewar gave up the trngge aifmlong out hen 1 ing in a good posi ¬ tion Sister Jeanie is seemingly faint hearted and will not stand much of a challenge I Samelson eh owed quite a turn of speed for four and a hall furlongs but quit when tha rub came Bengaw ran away six furlongs before the start Light Balli cood race at raven furlongs with 112 pounds up several days ago was entirely overlooked by many With but 93 pounds up yesterday 19 pounds off from his previous race he proved to be a wild horse running away from his field at the head of the stretch and winning easily by two lengths The struggle for second place was an exciting one four horses going under the wire closely together Goal Runner proved to ba the earnest of the quartet and got the second position by a head from School for Scandal on which Rival Dare and Mayor Dixon were lapped School for Scandal was clearly outrun in the early stages of the race but picked up in last eighth and was moving fast at the end Bival Dare tired in the closing strides while Mayor Dixon finished strongly Bonnie V ran well for five and a half furlongs and then tired tiredMondorb Mondorb off in front spreadeagled his field in the first race winning at the end in a big canter by six lengths with Captain Hamm five in front of Little Loie Vonzollern was backed for a good thing in this race He showed well for six furlongs and then retired It was about as poor a lot as could be gathered together at the track trackThe The finale proved to bo an easy matter for Brief which after lying well up with the lead ¬ ers to the final eighth came away as she pleased when called upon winning by four lengths from Searcher which beat Illilonon a head for sec ¬ ond place Searcher was speedy for a little over seven furlongs but in the closing strides he began to quit and just managed to got his head over the line in front of Illilonon G VY W made up ground in the run in and was closing fast at tha end Whitfield ran far below ex ¬ pectations Hylo ran well for six furlongs while Tammany Chiefs race was by no means up to his form
