3IAHKB MAY KTDE NO KORE Reports from Londop Bay that Daniol Maber the wellknown American jockey will probably nevor rids again Owing to a serious hemor ¬ rhage of the lungs physicians have warned kim it is said that to attaint to resntna work Ja the saddle sill result fatally It is therefoo onderetood that Maher will shortly cancel all of bis engagements in England and will return to this country in the near future says the New York Sun SunWhen When Tod Sloan want to Europe ia 1898 Maber became the leading jockey here and in ¬ cidentally was one of the most popular riders who ever drew a whip At sixteen years of ape Maber was making about 25000 a year out of faia engagements and mounts and was also rid ¬ ing four and five winners in a day It was while enjoying this phenomenal success that Danny was engaged at a big salary by the late William H Clark Maher had the most im ¬ plicit faith placed in him by the batting public as his work had always been free from sus ¬ picion and he had even been pronounced an honeat faithful boy But with the Suburban Handicap of 1899 came the first words of scan ¬ dal concerning Maher and it was a long time before they ceased to pass from toogue to tongue Malier bad the mount on Mr Clarks Banastar which was an overwhelming popular Savorite and which had been backed by Mr lark to the extent of 100000 in the ring it was said But in spite of the support accorded to Banastar his price lengthened a trifle jnst be ¬ fore going to the post postIt It is a matter of history how Banaetar sulked and refused to break with the other thorough ¬ breds how Maher lost his temper and unmerci ¬ fully beat the horee over the head with his whip aad how when the flag fell after a delay of an hour Banastar was left standing flatfooted thereby burning up thousands of dollars of the public money Mr Clark scented wrongdoing nf some kind and soon he meted out punish ¬ ment to the boy in the shape of a suspension a word Maher was set on the ground for a jear though he was to continue drawing his salary from Mr Clark Finally Mr Clark was porsnaded by Mahers frienda that he was not deserving of such severe punishniont and with ihe termination of the contract between them IMaher was allowed to ride for other owners ownersTwo Two years ago the jockey went to England wltero his success has been both brilliant and onstant Maher never possessed a rugged con ¬ stitution but he always took excellent care of himself and has never been ill before He baa Always been a daring rider a cool headed care ¬ ful boy who can finish with the best jockey in the world His home is in Hartford Conn where he will probably go as soon as ho arrives here It is hoped that the boy under careful treatment will recover his strength GO that some day he will be able once again to sport silk
