KO ARNOLDS HARLEM HANDICAP HANDICAPTha Tha last day of the Harlem summer mooting ended in a blaze of glory and a better days racing could hardly have been witnessed any ¬ where Close and exciting finishes were the role of tho day and enthusiasm was always rife weeks meeting at least twelve thousand persons having passed through the turnstiles The feature event of the day was the Harlam Stakes for threeyear olds and upward one and oneeighth miles with 1000 added The finish resulted in somewhat of a surprise the rich prize going to George Arnold who was backed by many wise turfmen He opened at eight to one and was backed down to four to one It was said before the race that he had work ¬ ed a mile and an eighth a day or two before the race in 1 53 and upon the strength of this workout he was plunged on Pink Coat was probably the best but Dnpea wan unable to give him the strong and vigorous tide that Winkfiold put up on the winner and he was beaten by the smallest of margins Another thing that helped George Arnold was the slow pace that was set to the head of the stretch which favored a sprinter of George Arnolds ability Advance Guard was given a shabby tide and was pocketed often Knight is too light to give the big horse the vigorous ride he requires to make him run to his best form formTo To a good start Yesnvian accompanied by Georga Arnold set out to make the pace with tha others bunched close up Vesuvian led by a length at the half and by a half at the three quarters with George Arnold running easily within himself second and Pink Coat a bang tip third All down the backatratch Yulcain and Advance Guard laid within call but the latter was wedged in and could not get through There was little change to the foregoing positions until wall straightened away for home where Pink Coat who had swung wide began to close gradually on those in front of him At the last sixteenth George Arnold had throat latched Yeanvian and was about a short length in front of Pink Coat Winkfield now began to ride Georga Arnold with all the force be could enmmon and despite tho fact that Pink Coat was gaining slowly at every stride just Man aged to land him across the line winner by a nose amid a thunderous about of applause Yesnvian was third lapped on but was falter ¬ ing slightly in the last few strides Advance Guard waa four lengths away awayBurma Burma Bnnton and Ed Austin were prohibi ¬ tive favorites for the first and second races respectively and eat y winners Henry of Trast amare took the third in good finish with Banish and Tha Pride experienced considerable diffi ¬ culty in landing the fifth from the speedy Federal Hermsncia easily won the long dis ¬ tance sixth race and the days sport ended with Anchor victor over Zacatoso in the seventh and concluding race of the day
