It rained heavily again at Hawthorne yester ¬ day the track and surroundings presenting as desolate a scene as one could imagine Despite the inclement conditions a large crowd was pres ¬ ent but the racing in most caies was of a tame order The attractive feature of the days sport was the Emerald Stakes a steeplechase handicap for fouryearolds and upward over the short coursa The chase developed into one of the bast crosscoantry affairs seen herea ¬ bout for some timo oven though the fences ware splashing water at every jump of the journey Saintly started out as if he was going to make a runaway race of it opening a gap of ten lengths which he hold until just af tar taking the fifth jump whore Dick Fuzber moved up Saintly stumbled at the sixth jump and came very near unseating his jockey This mishap seemed to take all the speed oat of him and he gradually retired thereafter Dick Furber held a fair lead from this point up to the last jump whore Flaccua Donation and Captain Conovcr closed on him Flaccua got clear of the field in the short stretch and appeared to be an easy win ¬ ner bnt Dick Furber came again in the closing strides and brought him to a hard drive to win by a neck with Captain Conovor third four lengths away Dick Furber was given a bung ¬ ling ride in the stretch or he would have won Donation and Captain Conover both closed much ground in the latter end of the route routeThe The parse in the fifth race was taken by that good mud mare Lennop who simply spread eagled her field and won as her rider pleased She led by ton lengths at one stage of the jour ¬ ney and finally crossed the line eased up by soven lengths from Banish he beating Major Dixon two lengths for second place Banish ran in much improved form over his last per ¬ formance and showed quite a liking for the going Major Dixon could not extend himself to any advantage in the slushy track and ran a dull race Charley Moore ran a disappointing race raceLissome Lissome was much the best of a very poor field in the first race and had no trouble in maintaining a good lead to the end af tsr the first quarter had beau run He won quite handily by three lengths from Patroon ho bo ing six in front of Onoto which had all ho could do to boat out Duty for third place Patroon closed up a lot of ground in the last Quarter and finished strongly stronglyJaubert Jaubert which has proved himself to be one of the moat consistent youngsters that has ran hare this year took tho second raca a six fur longodaah for twoyearolds in a big gallop although he was badly outran by Evening Star for the first five farlongs The latter tired badly when a furlong out and it was no trouble whatever for Jaubort always laid second to pass him and win by throe lengths while Evening Star took second place from Emathion by four lengths Neither Emathion nor Com ¬ missioner Forster could do themselves justice in the deep going and both were well spent by the time the wire had been reached Major Bird ran well for four and a half furlongs and boars watching watchingThe The Ryans after a number of attempts finally scored with their gelding Goal Runner in the third race although it was a pretty tight fit as he only won by a short head from Wallenstein in a hard drive The latter appeared to be an easy winner when turning into the stretch aa he had a comfortable lead of sixth lengths bnt he tired rapidly in the laat eighth allowing Goal Runner to get on even terms with him and pass him at the sixteenth post but he rallied in the closing strides and brought Goal Runner to a sharp ride to outlast him Max Bendix badly outrun in the first part of the race closed much ground when coming down the final quarter bat was so weak when a sixteenth oat that he swerved several times under punishment Ural could not extend himself in the peculiar going goingOld Old Oxnard repeated his performance of sev ¬ eral days ago and took about the same kind of field into camp in tho laat race a dash of one and oneeighth miles He led without much trouble from start to finish winning easily by three lengths The struggle for second place was a spirited one Tammany Chief lasting long enough to boat the fast closing Flying Torpedo on tho post by a neck with Georgo Lee also coming fast lapped on the lattor Flying Tor ¬ pedo and George Lee made up much ground in the last quarter The lattor should come pretty noar winning at his next outing over a similar distance and like condition of track
