Artena waB by far the best end simply ran away from her field in the laBt quarter. Miss Zara finished stontly and was the best of the others. Andie was outrun in the first half, bnt came fast in the last eighth. Economic and Haidee showed speed for five furlongs. It was about ae bad a lot as could be gotten together. Den-man Thompson came away without much trouble in the last sixteenth and was much the beat. Headwater finished stoutly and wore down Banco in the closing Btrides for second place. The latter showed all his usual speed, but was tiring rapidly in the last fifty yards. Harry Heran-deen ran the best race he has shown hereabout this year and is ready to win at his next asking if placed right. He showed speed throughout and only quit in the last sixteenth. Flying Torpedo assumed the lead after the first seven furlongs had been run and seemed to be winning easily in the last sixteenth, but had to be huBtled out to the last ounco to stall off Alaskas strong bid at the end. The latter came with a great rush in the last eighth and would have won in a few more Btrides. He was probably held a shade too far out of it for the first mile. Little Elkin fell out of it at the first six furlongs and then camo again in the last eighth. He ran a good race. Whitfield was badly cut down and was dostroyed. Barilla gradually fell away beaten after the first six furlongs had been run. Overweights Barilla, 11 pounds; Whitfield, 1; Little Elkin, 14. Flying Torpedo, show, 1 to 5. Alaska, show, 7 to 10. He was made too much use of in the first part of the race. Jaubert, badly outrun for the first four and a half furlongs, closed much ground in the first eighth on the inside rail. Brutal made up ground fast in the last half mile but hung in the last twenty yards. He was bumped almost out of his stride by Obia just after passing the last eighth post but it hardly made any difference in the result. Obia had enough after seven furlongB had been rnn. Bonnie Lissak finished resolutely but had no chance to beat the winner. Miss Soak was well worn out by the time the pinch came. Big Injun was right there for six furlongs. Marcos began to tire and quit in the last sixteenth. The Giver mot with much interference just after passing beyond the half milo post, but finished fast when he got clear sailing after swinging for home. Altona was always outrun. Hermis was cut off badly just before turning into the final quarter. He went down in a heap. Spanker foil just before straightening for home. Scratched 28299 Duke of Connaught, 100.
