FAST TIME AT HAKLEM. Harlem opened its final nine days meeting of 1901 moat auspiciously, fair weather, a bit? crowd and an excellent card of seven races all chiming in to make the days sport one long to be remembered. The track was in the boat condition possible and exceptionally fast time was the ruld throughout the afternoon. HargiB established a new track rncord for four and a half furlongs, running the ditanca in 53, which is three-fifths of a eecond f aBter than the previous track standard. The feature event of the day was the Oak Park Handicap, a dash of one and an eighth miles for three-year-olds, with ,000 added. Leo Newell, vith Coburn in the saddle, was made a Blight favorito over Six Shooter, but be failed dismally in the last quarter, finishing third. The result of the race was a false one, Silurian winning through Kniehts carelessness in the closing strideB. Leo Newell got out ti make the rnnning, holding a comfortable lead up to the head of th stretch, where he tired and Six Shooter passed easily into the van. Coming down the last eighth Knight saw he had everything beaten behind him and bfgan to take things easy. Opprsite the betting shed little Walsh brought up Silurian on the inside rail with unexpected suddenness. Knight was looking to the right and appeared to be perfectly oblivious of the fast closing horse to his left. About five strides from the wire he end denly became aware of the proximity of Silurian, but before he could rally Six Shooter the former had nailed him on the post by a short head. Leo Newell was third, a length away. The value of the stake to the winner was 1,060. Sharp Bird who has not started hereabouts in some time, was said to have worked eix furlongs in 1:13 fiat and on the strength of this reported rehearsal he was made a decided favorite in the third race, a dash of sixfurlongE. He rewarded the confidence placed in him by his backers by taking tbo lead at flag dip and remaining in front to the end, winning by a neck from Banco. The latter closed fast on him in the last sixteenth causing Birkenruth to ride him out to the last ounce. Bival Dare was third, three lengths away. In a rattling finish St. Marcos beat Boiling Boer for the fifth race, a mile done in a remarkably fast time, Orontas bing a close third. Emma B. captured the firat race easily from Segurandnca and Irish Jewel. Alfred C. beat a field of ordinary platers in the sixth, Captain Hamm and Evelyn Byrd running second and third and the closing race of the day went to Canova, he running in something like his old time form and winning with great ease from El Gbor, J. H. Barnes and ten others. Coburn was fined 0 and Baesinger, Knight and Blake 5 each for delaying the start in the second race. Davisson was fined 5 in the third and Winkfield 5 in the sixth for the same offense. Jockey Bassinger has beau set down for two days for misbehavior while at the post. Jaubart pulled up lama after his race of yesterday. Jockey Gormley is on the sick list. The entries of Buzzer and Herein will be refused in future at Harlem until they are properly schooled at the barrier. "Counselor Bill" Rrion was a visitor at Harlem yesterday, having- just returned from the Klondj ke. Banco was claimed out of the third race yesterday by O. E. Bowe for ,000. Trainer McDaniels says Abe Frank is rounding to and will start the latter part of the present meeting.
