GOSSIP OV THE XDEF. The Latonia fall meeting begins this after noon and it is pleasant to Lote that there is every indication that it will bo about the most prosperous meeting held at the old track for several years. Horses in abundance, a strong ring, no opposition, and the fact that Cincin- j j nati has had no racing for a long time and is proBably hungry for a renewal of the fascinating sport, are factors that should serve to make amende for the discouraging circumstances under which the Latonia spring meeting was conducted. Daily Bacing Foem is solicitous for the success of racing wherever properly conducted in this country and trusts that the Latonia Jockey Club will now enjoy the abundant patronage that has been such a Btrongly marked feature of racing elsewhere throughout the land this year, Daily Bacikg Foem gives considerable Bpace in thiB issue to displaying the remarkably good patronage that has been awarded the California Jockey Clubs list of stakes that closed October 5. There waB an unjustified impression in some quarters that these events would not make a showing as good as in former years and it is gratifying to note that bo far is this from baing the case that the entries excel any here, tofore made for these particular stakes. It is evident that 8an Francisco is to have a season of racing unexcelled in its paBt history, and it is now in order for owners to make their entries in the second list- of stakes, the conditions of which appear in the advertising department of this issue and entries to which close November 4. "When I was back east rocently," said Captain Bice, "I had to sit still and hear ex-Jockey Combs tell how he burned my money and made me poor when he subjected my horse, Wax Taper, to the illegal restraint for which he was ruled off. I tell yen it made be boil to hear the man tell how he pulled my horse when I was betting a lot of money on him. Yot the confession had it droll features, too. Combs made his confession in my presence to Bbb Pinkerton, the detective. " Combs, Baid Pinkerton, at what particular place did you pull Wax Taper? " Mr. Pinkerton. replied the unfortunate man, there wa. no particular place. He waB bo much the best that I took no chances. I began to pull him at the start, kept pulling him to the last eighth, where there was a mix-up. Then I took advantage of that to pull him good. So I handed the air to the WestinghouBO brake and put it down so hard that I thought he was through. But he was eo full of run ana fight i that 1 had to keep pumping air to him going down the last sixteenth. It was a case of pull from Etart to finish. "It made me feel bad for myself because of the money I lost," continued Captain Bice, "and bad for the horse who wob fighting, even his rider, from whom he had a right to expect some help, in order to win for me. I felt like killing the man then, but when I thought it over I saw that not he, but a bookmaker wliom, he admitted, gave him 00 for pulling the ; horse, was the real culprit. Combs never can ride again, but he turned up this bookmaker proper." "It was rumored that certain handbook makers of St. Louis, whoBe places of business are west of Fourteenth street, had a hand in tho job, and that they paid Combs to pull the horse, who waB always backed in 8t. Louis. This, Captain Bico says, is not true, that only one bookmaker and his agent waB implicated, and they operate in New York." at. .Louis Bepublic.
