ORONTAS GOOD RACE. A fine drizzle came down at Lakeside yesterday up to tho time the horses went to the post in the fifth race, and then it began to pour, rendering the track sloppy. The uninviting weather bad no effect in diminishing the crowd, which was as largo as tho usual Monday gathering. The betting was comparatively light. The principal race of the day waB the fourth, a dash of one mile and seventy yards for three-year-olds and upward. Orontas and Haviland were made equal choices in the betting, being held at 8 to 5, but the f ormer ran one of the best races of his career and after being apparently beaten off while going down the backstretch made up ground rapidly from the half mile post and after a merry drive with Denman Thompson in the last eighth finally won by a length, Denman Thompson finished second four lengths in front of Tolamon. Tho latter raced Haviland to defeat and wore himself out in doing so. Little Jack Horner took the sprinters Money Mues and Burnie Bunton into camp in the sec ond race, a dash of five furlongs, He and Money Muss fought it out sharply down the last eighth but in tho last fifty yards he drew gradually away winning by a length. He slightly interfered with Money Musb in the last sixteenth but hardly enough to make any difference in the rosult. Burnie Bunton did not show her UBual Bpeed and ran as if a little short. Maggie Davis was always outrun. Dulcimer. Ions overdue, won the first race, a scramble of five and a half furlongs for two-year-olds, by a head from Fade Mony, wnich beat Pyrrno the scms distance fdr second place. Coburoe powerful finish was responsible fcr Dulcimers victory. EerodeB ran a fair fourth, showing at about an even gait throughout. The long Distance race over the Derby route went to the iocg overdue Azim, hich closed no fast by the tiice the last Quarter had been reached and after a short brush with Admetus in the last eighth, came away without much trouolo and won by three lengths. Uncle Tom quiv at tne head of the stretch, but rallied again in ma last sixteenth, finishing strongly enough to nip out Admetus on the post for second place by a neck, Frangible and Strangest had enough by the time the turn for home had been reached. The fifth race was run in a heavy rain storm. It waB a six-furlong dash for two-year-olds and waB won by Inspector Shaa in a hot finish by a head from Golden Glitter, which beat Hoodwink two lengths for second place. Autumn Leaves, the favorite, began to tire faBt when the stretch drive came. Fantasy reveled in the sloppy going in the last race, a dash of one and one-sixteenth miles, taking the lead at flag fall and easily maintaining it all the way. She won hands down by four lengths from Farmer Bennett, which beat the 6 to 5 favorite, Reseda, five lengths for second place. Reseda could not extend herself fully in the going. Precursor and Wood stick ran well for seven furlongs. Jockey Buchanan was a visitor at the track yesterday, having just roturned from across tho wator. He expects to return on the 15th of January and ride for W. K. Vanderbilt in France. It is reported M. H. Tichenor has bought Val-dez from James Arthur for ,0C0. Little Jack Horner, which won the second race yeetarday and beat such sprinters as Money Musb and Burnie Bunton, is trained by J. O. Keene.
