BANCOCASBRED BACEBS. ? Mr. W illiam C. Whitneys decision to remove his stallions and broodmares from Kentucky to his recently leased BancocaB farm in New Jersey has elicited considerablo discussion, some writers taking the ground that it is doubtful if thoroughbreds can be successfully raised in the more northern state. In an articla published in Daily America Judge Joseph J. Burko combats this ill-founded idoa by pointing out the lata Pierre Lorillarda great success in this country and England with horses bred by him, the natural deduction being that if he could raise and devolop high-class racers at Rancocas Mr. Whitney should do so also. The article referred to says: "No one need have any doubts as to whether or not first-class race horses can be bred at the HancocasStud Farm at Jobstown, N. J. It has, of course, been an established nursery for many-Tears, in fact a quarter of a century, and naturally in all that time some high-class horses should have been foaled there, unless it was an absolute impossibility to breed thorn there. The fact that the late Mr. Pierre Lorillard raced in the past few years practically only those horses brei at Rancocas would go to show that ho at least had unbounded faith in the place. At different times the Btallions doing duty at Rancocas have been Duke of Magenta, Moccasin, Mortimer, Saxon, Eantaka, Sensation, The. Sailor Prince, Locohatchee formerly called Curt Gunn, Simon Magus the first son of St. Simon ever imported to this country, Emperor, Iroquois, Falsetto, Pontiac, and one or two othors of less note. By all odds the most succiBBful of these were Mortimer, The Sailor Prince and Sensation. "It was in the year 1884 that the first crop of the French horse Mortemer came out, and to eay that their successes created a sensation puts it very mildly. Wanda, Chimera, Unrest, Cho-lula and Exile were all in one stable that season, to say nothing of Katrine, who did not ran as a two-year-old, but who was generally reputed to be the best Mortemer foaled. Unfortunately, she was cut down in the September Stakes that fall, and waB never able to fulfil the undoubted great promise she showed in private. Exile was claimed out of a selling race at Sheepshead Bay in his two-year-old form, and helped to lay the foundation of the comfortable fortune which William Lakeland has acquired in his long connection with the turf. "In 1885 the Rancocas Stable waa in great form, through its home-bred and imported horses. Pontiac had been imported in utero, sent to England and raced there; then brought back and raced here in 1881, going into winter quarters with no great reputation, for the late Mr. J. G. K. Lawrence handicapped him at only 102 pounds for the Suburban of 1885, which he won, and but for the prohibition of public betting, whereby no bookmakers did business that day, Mr. Lorillard would have probably broke the ring, for he won three races that day namely, with Emperor, Heva and Pontiac, and Gonfalon, bred by him, ran second in the steeplechase. "The lack of opportunity to back his horBes that day was always one of the greatest disappointments of Mr. Lorillarda life, for a keen contest had been waged for years between the members of the ring and the Master of Rancocas, and just when he had a chance to deal them a heavy blow, th law waB enforced and public betting prevented. However, it was understood that in the ante-post betting during the winter and spring, Mr. Lorillard had backed Pontiac for the Suburban. Matt Byrnes waB the trainer at that period, and until the memorable sale In 1883, when Pontiac, Pontico, by the Duryoa Brothers for 0,000, and Byrnes was asked to continue to train them, "Mortemer was third on the list of winning i sireB in.1885, only King Alfonso and Vagil pre- ceeding him. Wanda won ,640; Unrest, 0,-408; Cyclops, ,870; Saranac, ,120; Katrine, 53,556; Exile, ,965; Mollie Walton, ,840; Faience, ,825; Saluda, ,800; Pontico, ,300; Bahama, 00; Hera, 75; Restless, 75 ; Ariel, 00; Winfred, 00; Nenotzin, 50; Billy Mack, 50; Drone, 5; Welcome, 0. Total, 6,299. None of the following won any money in 1885 : Housatonic, Witch, Paul Kernan, JohnMullins, Heimdal, Cholula, Naiad and Boder. In 1884 Mortemers produce won 9,5CO. Adding this to the amount won by his get in 1885 and we find that in his first two seasons this great stallions produce won 15,799, and all were bred at Rancocas. We now come to the sale of the Rancocas racing stable on Saturday, February 27, 1886, Colonel S. D. Bruce was the auctioneer. As a matter of great interest the record of this eventful transaction is herewith, published. Phelps, New York City 650 Total 48,850 Average twenty-seven head 5,513 "Of the foregoing list, Drake Carter, Emperor, Greenfield and Walter H, were the only ones not bred at Bancocae. Pontiac was foaled there, though begot in England. Drake Carter was purchased by Mr. Lorillard Boon after the terrific mile and a half race at Saratoga, in which he defeated Barnes in 2:36. Walter H. waa well known at that period as a Brighton Beach champion. He waB owned and raced by a weBtorn turfman named D. OConnor, and was bought by Mr, Lorillard for about 0,000, and ran well after he became his property. His purchaser theRancocas Bale waB once a well known popular saloonkeeperinjfciiy. by Mr. Charles Reed, formed the Fairfax Btable with the horses bonght at the sale. Fitzpatrick was the rider and I think Jamos Howe trained for him for a time, but the stable did not do woll, "Mr. Lorillard continued to breed at Rancocas, and. after some time heeame back upon the turf. Lamplighter was his best horse at I that time. But whenever ha got anything good enough he waa determined to race in England, and for the past six seasons, with John Hug-gins at first and Gaorge.Blackwell of late, he has been racing horseB of Rancocas breeding with remarkably great success. Long after many had passed from his possession they continued to win. Btrzak, Diakka, Dolabra, Astolpbo, Draco, Glaring, Jiffy II., Meta II., Sandia, Caiman, Chinook, Dominie II., Darie, Elfin, Myakka, Sibola who should have won the Oaks of her year, Tarolinta, Blast, Democrat, Jolly Tar, Jouvence. Lutetia, Manatee, Pedometer, Perdicus, Violence, Yumboe, Brelogui, Bronze-wing, Corypheus, Exedo, Golden Horseshoe, Old Buck II., and many others have won Bums running up as high as 9,000 in one instance. "After a hasty look over the carefully prepared list of American winning horses in England in the last four yeara. as published in Goodwins Gnide, I think it is a conservative statement to make that Rancocas bred horses won in four years 1897 to 1900 inclusive about 25,000. This does not include the winnings of 1896 or 1901, which of themselves form a very handsome total, but are not at this writing available. It iB safe to assume that half a million dollars is a moderate estimate of the winnings of Rancocas bred horses upon the English turf, where it is admittedly harder to win tnan it is here. And all this time, too, BancocaB bred horses ware winning on the local turf. "Long before the break up of the racing stable in 1886, however, Mr. Lorillard had bred good winners at Rancocas, notably Gerald, by Saxon, who was sent to England and was a really good colt there in 1881. Sachem, his stable mate, was not bred at Rancocas. Parthenia, dam of Watershed, this years winner of the Cambridgeshire, was raced in England by Mr. Lorillard, but bred at Chestnut Hill. "Appended iB a statement of what the horses bred by the late Mr. Lorillard won on the English turf in four years: Democrat, by Sensation 9,297 Caiman, by Locohatchee 55,278 Sibola, by The Sailor Prince ...31,479 Jolly Tar, by The Sailor Prince 29,212 Dominie II., by Sensation 29,356 Diakka, by The Sailor Prince 23,608 Sandia, by The Sailor Prince 22,038 Myakka, by Sensation. . 15,522 Jiffy II., by The Sailor Prince 14,450 Lutetia, by Pontiac 14,209 Meta II., by Sensation 10,162 Tarolinta, by Pontiac 10,518 "The following horses have won the Bums following their names : "Pedometer, ,289; Jouvence, J93;,I Blast, ,435; Illogic, ,835; Allegory, 81; Old Buck II., ,708 ; Benzak, ,874 ; Chinook, ,007 ; Dorie, ,810; Dolabra, ,636; Exedo, ,536; Elfin, ,425; Bellesama, ,738; Bloozem, ,000; La-kota, ,425; Litra, ,019; Pan, ,430; Boomer, ,254; Pascola, ,357; Lapwing, 90; Quibble, 90; Manatoe, ,448; Perdicns, ,010; Pod-snap, 95; Pomfret, 90; St.Elis,90; Silvah, ,932; Solano, 90; Violence, ,277; Yumboe, ,758; Astolpho, ,530; Atossah, S906; Beryl, 05; Dorado, 05; Draco, ,250; Glaring, ,347. Total, 26,465. "Whan, therefore, it is proposed to place at Rancocas such stallions as Hamburg, Meddler and Llssak, and such maraa as Lady Reel, dam of Hamburg; Ballyhoo, dam of Ballyhoo Bey; Endurance by Right, Admiration, Rush, Blue Girl and that great array of high-bred mares now at La Belie, can there be any reasonable
