JORDAN 3 POOR RACE. The early morning rain of yesterday in this vicinity rendered the Lakeside track a sea of slushy sand, and mudlarks consequently held supreme sway throughout the days sport. Contrary to expectations, the inclement weather had no deterrent effect upon the attendance, which was as large as usual. The most important race of the day was the fourth, a dash of one mile and one hundred yards for three-year-olds and upward. Of the seven scheduled to start Lady Strathmore and Peaceful were absentees. Jordan, on his known liking for a heavy track, was made a decided favorite, being held at 2 to 5 in the betting, but the best he could do was to run third, the winner turning up in Dr. Stephens, backed from 6 to 4 to 1. Dr. Stephens, closely pressed by The Conqueror II., showed1 the way until in the final quarter, where the former drew steadily away, winning easily by one and a half lengths from The Conqueror II., which beat Jordan the same distance for second place. Jordan fell far out of the race after the first half had been run, but rallied in the last quarter and finished strongly. Scarlet Lily ceased to be a serious factor after the first four and a half furlongs had been run and was badly beaten off at the end. Vulcain might just as well have remained in his stall for all the figure he cut in the race. The first race of the day, a dash of five and one-half furlongs for two-year-old fillies, proved to be an easy thing for Sarah Maxim, the second choice in the betting. She darted to the front as soon as the barrier arose and, displayingkeen speed, simply spreadeagledthe field, winning as her rider pleased by four and one-half lengths from Goody Twoshoes, which beat Centie two lengths for second place. Brookston, displaying some of his last springs form, won the fifth race, a dash of six furlongs for two-year-olds. Lord Melbourne, on account of his good race in the mud last week, was made a decided favorite, opening at 6 to 5 and being backed down to an odds-on choice, but the best he could do was to run second. Brookston won by a neck, Lord Melbourne finishing five lengths before Zepho for second place. Hoodwink was made an odds-on favorite in tho second race, a dash of seven furlongs for three-year-olds, and won as the bettiDg indicated. 8ho led from start to finish, winning easily by two and a half lengths from Moahina, which beat Inspector Shea a short head for second place. Mattie 8pencers victory in the third race, a six furlong dash for three-year-olds and upward, cams in the nature of a surprise as the talent picked Corinne Unland for almost a certainty on account of her known liking for a heavy or sloppy track. To a good start Mayor Johnson jumped into the lead, but was soon joined by Corinne Unland, tho two running as one horse until straightened for home. About the last eighth post Mattie Spencer, which had been lying in third position up to this point, moved up fast and after a short brush with Mayor Johnson in the last sixteenth, beat him to the wire by half a length. Corinne Unland finished an indifferent third. The last race, a dash of one and three-sixteenths miles for three year-olds and upward, went to Pirates Queen, well ridden by Bobbins. Off in front, she led from flag fall to wire, winning easily by ono length from Erne, which beat Egyptian Prince fonr lengths for second place.
